LS1 vs. LQ4 swap option
Hi.
I'm new to these LS engine.
Looking to swap v8 into my E36.
Read alot of info online but still not sure which one to go with.
The different between LS1 and LQ4 is not much imo. But price is huge different.
Iron vs alum. (70 lbs different)
6.0 vs 5.7
low comp vs high comp
Im going to run T56 tran on either of the engine.
I'm looking to keep it stock for while but want to build it to 450ish hp.
I want to keep it NA since its daily drive with some track event or mountain drive.
Which will be better to start with?
Which will be cheaper to make 450hp?
Which will you guys recommend?
Thanks for all the help

Spend a few bucks extra up front, get the higher compression 6.0 LQ9. With just an exhaust and a tune, you're at over 400hp.

Would the LS1 vs the LQ9 really be that much cheaper if you have to swap the truck accessories to the car accessories to fit it under the hood? Plus swapping the intake over to an ls1/ls6. If your starting from scratch the price starts to add up on the LQ9. I may be wrong, but im wondering the same question for my swap ls1 vs lQ9.

But I wouldn't start with lq9 since it's pretty much the same as lq4 beside compression.

Another advantage to the 6.0 is that you can go with the LS3 top end later down the line if you want more power. You cant put the LS3 heads on the 5.7.

I spent $35 for the LS1 intake, $100 for the vette pan. Reused truck TB and injectors.
Accessories will depend on the seap. I was able to use truck alt/ps bracket on one swap.
On the AC compressor, a lot here seem to relocate upper passenger and use aftermarket compressor. If you do use stock location, the truck have a fixed displacement compressor that seems to work better with older AC systems as opposed to the LS1s variable displacement.
Cost to make 400hp is a lot less with the LQ9, 450hp will be about the same for both, 500+hp would be a lot cheaper with the LQ9 since you can use the L92 heads on a 6.0, but not the 5.7.
Add to that, LS1s have not been made for quite a few years. It's pretty easy to find low milage truck motors.

Things to consider, wieght: Iron blocks are just a tad over 100LBS heavier that aluminum. Accesories: The LS1 stuff isnt made any more and is getting harder and harder to find. Look to the Vette stuff that is still avalable from dealers. Ive replaced 2 aluminum motors with iron blocks with no problems in my setups. If the wieght isnt going to hurt your setup Id stay with the iron blocks, much cheaper and easier too find.
