Default Modified A-body cross member query

Is there a way to modify the cross member on a GTO\Chevelle\Skylark to make pulling a transmission on an ls\4l60e swap easier? It really is a bear trying to get the trans to line up with the motor while the factory trans x-member is present.

Couldn't you just unbolt the crossmember and slide it back on the frame? Then slide it forward into place once the transmission is lined up and bolted on.

Sigh. If that were an option versus trying to retool the x-member, I would friend.

Mine will just slide back(at an angle) out of the way to drop the tranny out. It won't come out because the exhaust traps it within the frame.

Both my A-bodies unbolt and slide out. I thought all a-bodies were similar.

Yeah. Just slide one side back, and the other side forward. Should come right out.

I could not put the trans in even with the cross member slid all the way back so I took it out. Now that the trans is in, I can't get the cross member to slide in.

Did you unhook the exhaust? Should be plenty of room. Jack the trans all the way up against the tunnel.

I sectioned the crossmember at the center and dropped it to allow for exhaust and trans clearance since the engine sits so low. Not really pretty but it works well.

Unhook the drivers side exhaust at the rear mount. Slide the crossmember passenger side forward first, then straiten it out.
Done it several times on my olds.

I did not unhook the exhaust because it is a old and a bitch to get to. The saw-all will be coming out tomorrow.

Looks damn good to me

I will try that first tomorrow. Really don't need the exhaust anyway since I am going with a single turbo Demah kit.
