Default take a sweet deal on 4.8 or save for lm7/lq9

hey everyone, first post on here. I joined trying to gather all the information I can as I'm trying to plan out some sort of ls swap into my z33 z.

with that out of the way I was cruising craigslist and found a deal on a 4.8 (not sure of mileage) that's missing intake, accessories, coils. pretty much everything but block heads and rotating assembly. the guy is asking $200. although this is not my motor of choice it's hard to pass up. my question I guess it whether it is worth it, or should I save up more and wait, and hope for either a 5.3 or 6.0 to come along.

I was also thinking before I saw this ad about trying to find a cheap truck, pull the motor and sell the rest to help pay for the swap.

any information would be great.

It depends on your goals. If boost is in your future, a 4.8 will work fine. A stock NA 4.8 won't be any faster than the VQ35 was.

I was hoping for enough power to demolish my brothers 5.0 fox with a vortec so about 5-600 at the wheels. i don't know if I would go boost or not yet, as there really isn't a whole lot of room in the engine bay as it is. the main reason I want to swap is because the parts for the vq are incredibly expensive and I figured for the money I'd spend building my motor up I could have more power from an ls.
I'd really prefer the lq9 but the price on the 4.8 is just so tempting.
also I'm sure it will come up but it is my daily and I would want to keep it somewhat street able. I do a lot of light to light and would like to do a track day here and there.

You will have to at least spray if you want to beat your brother. Custom specd cam, stall, ARP studs etc etc. Its really up to you.

I'd pass on it. $200 is cheap but it's missing so much stuff and you'd have to spend so much you might as well just wait for a $300 5.3

I agree with Chuck, wait until you find one with all the accessories. Will be cheaper in the end

can 5.3s - 6.0s not rev that high with an upgraded valve train? right now my vq redlines at 6600 so anything more would be awesome.

+2. Not really that much of a deal when compared to the price of complete pull outs. if it has usable 243 heads then might be worth buying just to sell those.

It has 862's on it. I'm still struggling to retain everything I read on these motors but arent they one of the better sets of heads?

Yes the 862 was a better casting. The 706 casting had some cracking problems, Castech there was TSB on it.

$200 is FAR from a good deal for what's basically a long block. A 5.3 from intake to pan should only run you $2-300.
