Default Just a day away and then boom, engine gone!

Well live has its highs and lows. Last weekend I got the LS1/4L60e fired up in my 1970 chevelle. Man what a milestone. Just a half hour ago I started it up to add more fluids and such and then boom. A hole now resides in the block just above the oil filter. I thought the main pully had a wobble to it but it ran and idled smooth.

I am still in shock and dont know what I should do with the 98 vette 5.7 now. The block is gone but what do you guys think I should do?

How close I was

Pull it and drop something else in. That sucks for sure, but at least the hard work is done.

A few options depending how big your pocket book is. Get anther used motor and stick that one in or a used short block. Get a new factory style short block. Last get a big inch short block and use your parts.

Is everything compatible with my heads? I remember reading something about the cathedral heads vs square heads.

This is why I was happy to get a motor needing rebuilt already and having it done....didn't want the "what if" over my head every time I turned the key.

Sorry to see this

Maybe you can salvage most of it and build one ?

That really sucks man! But most of your stuff will interchange as long as you stick to gen3 engines. I would find you a 2002-2007ish 6.0 and swap all your parts over to it.

So I take it my heads will work on a 6.0? Would the ecu need to be changed?

I believe the shorts blocks are all basically the same. Just add your parts to it. Use your current ecu. You will have to get it re-programmed for a larger displacement or modifications such as a larger camshaft and/or exhaust. When you get to the Gen4 motors the reluctor is different and maybe the knock sensors.

Been there done that with a SBC years ago. I was fixing my wife's car back when we were dating. I had her car at my place replacing a flat cam. While breaking in the new one the motor started ticking. Then a big BANG!! Had a piece of the cam in the lifter valley and a hole in the side of the block. I found 17 lifters when it was all sorted out. Totally sucked!!

I say get another short block and bolt your parts on and drop it in! I know it sucks but you cannot let it beat you!

So I dug into today and found the headgasket was bad on number 7 and it compressed coolant that charged the rod through the block.

So as of now the front accessories are good and that's it. Heads could be okay but we will see. What heads would work best? I remember 317 heads??

You can reuse everything except the long block. If you want to just get it running, with minimal effort, get a 5.3L long block and swap everything over.

I'm sure the intake and of course the fuel rail is probably still good....

But yeah, most everything will change over.

All too common, LS1s have not been made in over 10 years and very few were driven lightly. Look for a pre-07 iron truck motor 6.0 or 5.3. Don't swap anything other than intake accessories.

Update
I bought an iron 6.0 long block with 799 heads, cam, valves, springs, etc. there goes my wheel fund, oh well. As far as intake manifolds go, how much would my 98 vette hurt the setup? What would work best with 799/cathedral heads?
