Is it legal to build my own RV out of a Pickup?

I would like to have a older full sized Chevy PU probabley 2006 or a few years older (that will eventually receive a LS type engine) then remove the bed and peramently install a small camper (actually cutting the back wall of truck and mating the camper to truck) like the ones used on Toyota RVs
Like this.attached image. I’m on the lookout for a wrecked Toyota that the camper can be salvaged.

I’m wanting a comfortable tow vehical to tow a 3K LB boat from Atlanta to the Gulf.
Where I can have all the comforts of home and have room for a fish freezer. Yet still get decent MPG.

Plus I I like the idea of parking wherever a car can park.

1.Like when a cop pulls me over the truck is registered as a truck however it’s actually a RV will this be illegal?

2.Also is there a special driver license to drive a RV?

edit the toyota frame and rear axel is only stronge enought to carry it's camper toyota doe'snt recommend any towing w/ this camper

RV's don't require a special license. Your insurance company may want to know but not sure about the state.

Unless you REALLY want to build a class c RV, you're better off buying one. They almost give away old RV on craigslist around here.

I have dreams of a NBS 2500 with a flip-pac, which not really what you're looking at.
but my dreams have an oil-burner for power leaving the LS motors in my hotrods
so um. yeah.

In Illinois you have to have rv plates to have people riding in camper part. In order to change to that type of plate you have to have the DMV inspect it for the safety features required. So in short check your state laws. But where I live, yes you can do it.

I agree, buy one complete then do your engine swap. If the chassis can't haul the load you may need to upgrade the chassis or reinforce it yourself.

If you were to use a 2006 GM truck chassis you would already have the proper engine.

If you use a Toyota camper shell, you will have to modify either the camper, the GM truck chassis or both since I'm sure they didn't work from the same blueprints building the frame to bed mounts.

Happy hunting.

^^^ i agree with them^^^
be alot easier to just get a cab chassis style rv
but most of the ones ive seen are build on the van style chassis

so i get what your trying to build,
the hd truck chassis would have a higher gvwr then the van chassis (tow more weight )
plus u could start with a 4x4 truck an have a rv u can take out on the beach
