Default 1999 Cobra 6.0L, 4L80E, Holley Dominator, A/C

I started this swap in September 2014. I've owned the car since 2009. I used to have an eaton blower from an 03 cobra and it was somewhat quick (11.80s @ 120mph).
I raced it a bunch on the street this past weekend and it seems to be about a 12.60-12.80 car.

Here is what the car currently consists of:

Stock 6.0L, stock 4L80E, LS6 intake, Dynatech swap headers, Holley Dominator EFI, E85, 160lb injectors.

The plan for the car is to pull the motor back out shortly and put a blower cam and converter in it. Sometime this summer I will fab up a blower bracket for a procharger F1A.

A couple notes for those looking to do the swap:

The 4L80E was almost the same length as the T45, so I was able to use my stock driveshaft with a T400 yoke on it. I bought a spicer 2-3-10831X yoke.

The only trans tunnel clearancing I needed to do was around the gear selector shaft, but a couple hits with a hammer solved it. Otherwise, fits great. I also used 90 degree trans cooler fittings for clearance.

I made brackets to adapt my stock a/c and p/s pumps to the GM engine so neither system needed to be opened up.

I used AJE's k-member and crossmember (for a 4L60E). I had to cut out my stock transmission brackets where it attaches to the body. I had to make brackets that mount to the subframe connectors to attach to the AJE x-member.

I used my stock radiator and fan.

I used a stock mustang 99-04 shifter so it mounted in the stock location. I disassembled the **** and put my manual transmission boot over it. I bought a black auto **** from UPR to replace the factory ****. I had to cut the end off the shifter cable on the transmission side, and weld on the correct end for the 4L80e.

No gauge headaches! The Holley LCD touchscreen has all the guages you need, and is incredibly clear. I was worried it would be too small. Not the case!

Car was stock 4.6L 4 valve, t45 trans, but had a built rear 4.10 gears, subframe connectors, battery relocation.

The stock motor before I pulled it. It's huge!

I picked up a 6.0L and mating 4L80E out of a 2001 GM truck with 110K miles for $1200.

It was pretty nasty, so I tore it down to the shortblock just to clean it up.

Here is the 4L80E next to the T-45

I made a bracket allows my Ford A/C compressor to bolt to the GM block

I also made a bracket to use my Ford power steering pump so I could keep power steering and brakes

Belt routing to accommodate the A/C. I used Procharger's alternator relocation bracket, and procharger's thermostat housing that points straight out. This allowed me to use my stock radiator also.

Finished belt routing

I used AJE's transmission crossmember for the 4l60, and had to fabricate some of my own brackets that mount to the subframe connectors.

I fabricated an aluminum plate to mount the Holley touchscreen where my factory gauges were.

I also made a plate to mount the dominator ecu where the glovebox used to be.

In preparation for big hp, I sumped my stock tank and used a Magnafuel 750 (4303) pump. Aeromotive rails, Holley 160lb injectors.

Fuel cooler mounted

Here is its current status. I'm still planning to clean it up a ton, but decided to wait until the blower is on.

Very nice clean swap! I like all your custom brackets to use the ford accesories. I would of built the dohc, boosted it to hell, and put the 4l80 on!

The brakes and power steering are exactly like stock. I havent finished wiring the a/c to be controlled by the dominator yet.

I like the brackets to mount the accessories. Nice job.

Isn't it amazing how much more room is in the engine bay compared to the mod motor?

That is a very clean looking swap. Did you return fuel to the top of the tank using the 5/16 stock feed line? IAT will suffer some with that filter pulling engine room air, I'm sure it's temporary.

Clean swap man. I can't wait to get going on my 95. I like what you did with the screen for the gauges, may have to borrow that idea lol.

The fuel returns to the sump next to the feed. I welded a plate in between the feed and return ports on the sump so the feed isnt pulling return fuel directly.
I'm putting the Procharger on soon so I didnt bother building a cold air inlet.

I'm working my way through my 03 cobra swap right now, if you've got more pics and info on the bracket to use the Ford AC compressor I'd really appreciate it
Car looks awesome

Any pics of what you used to attach the factory shifter cable to the 4l80e?

No pics, but I had to cut the transmission end off both the mustang and the chevy truck cable and weld the truck cable to the end of my mustang cable. Then just modifying the chevy trans cable bracket to mount to the trans pan bolts at the right spot. It's a PITA

I got the motor back in, this time with Brute Speed blower cam, and ported 317 heads, built the 4L80E and put a 4K PTC converter in. Also, cleaned up the engine by by moving the power steering reservoir to the corner of the fender, the regulator is now on the fuel rail, and hid some of the wiring on the passenger fender.
Also bought some weld S77s.

Default ls swap

very nice clean looking job.

Friend of mine is in the process of putting a forged 370 in his mustang right now. I would also be interested in your bracket drawings for the ford PS pump. we have a mill but it would be cool if you could / would share your template.

Good job, car looks awesome!
