Default Asked a million times I'm sure

Hey guys, just a simple (I hope) non confrontational thread that I'm sure has been asked 100 times lol

I'm doing a 5.3 swap out of a 00 tahoe 4wd into my 78 el camino and have a question about the radiator, I have searched a little here and some Google searching but can't quit come up with a strong answer.

Am I correct on my knowledge that the radiators for these are reverse flow? Is there any way I can get a radiator to fit my elky and not spend $300+ thanks guys and sorry for my lack of knowledge

I am not to sure about the flow but I put a 5.3 in my 1992 chevy pickup 3 years ago and I am using the 1992 radiator which works fine.

Any radiator large enough will cool fine. Direction does not matter at all on a radiator.

For a low cost option, look into the C4 Corvette radiators. I don't know how the dimensions stack up against the space you are working with, but they are inexpensive, light, and have the correct size inlet and outlet for a LS engine.

Reverse flow is when the top and bottom nipple are on the same end of the radiator and there's a plate put in the middle of the nipple end cap that forces the coolant to flow one direction and back to insure proper flow. If you don't divert the flow it won't cool properly. I've converted several as I'm fairly handy with aluminum tig welding.

Isn't that called a cross-flow?

Always heard them called double pass.

Most radiators have been cross flow since the late 50's or early 60's (tank on the right and left, coolant dumps into one tank, and flows across the radiator)

The really old stuff used down flow radiators (tank on the top and bottom, coolant dumped into the top tank, and flows down to the bottom tank)

Krom--- thank you for finding the correct home for this thread

Sorry I never really explained what I've got, 78 el camino stock 305 and I guess I was wondering if a 3 core (ish) radiator meant for this vehicle would be enough to cool one of these 5.3s

I also am wondering if the trans line for an older gen 1 style trans would be adaptable to the 4l60e, gonna end up doing both of these and want to be able to cool the whole system, thanks for the responses guys but I still haven't gotten an answer
--Edit-- also planning on running the 00 windstar style dual fan w/no AC

I will have to look into the corvette radiator, thanks

-If its in good condition should be fine, any of the rads listed here will do the job,you can spend way more if you like!

-You will need to change the fittings on the 4L60E to the old style flare fittings, just pull them out of your old trans, they are NOT NPT,make sure you use the proper ones, also plan on adding a decent trans cooler if you don't already have one.

--Edit-- also planning on running the 00 windstar style dual fan w/no AC

-The only thing worthwhile from Ford other than a nine inch rear,is their fans,
can't be beat for the price if you can fab simple brackets.

I will have to look into the corvette radiator, thanks

Those fans work very well in an a-body application...

We have used 2002 camaro radiators and fans in sn-95's many times. Might see if that will fit the elco.
