Default Need Help Identifying Fitting on Filter Housing Inside Oil Pan

I think I know that this is, and I am pretty sure it means I won't be able to use my Autokraft oil pan, but can you tell me what this fitting is on the inside of the oil pan on the oil filter housing?

It's the one to the left.

Do you have a VVT or DOD engine?

I think you would have to delete the VVT or DOD to use the Autokraft pan.

It is a pressure regulator. You can run without it from some of the posts of long ago. You will see slightly higher pressure.

That is weird because my new crate LS3 has it and it should not be DOD or VVT.

I think he has a L92, which has VVT, but not DOD (AFM).

*edit* He has a L96, which has VVT, but not DOD (AFM). More details about the L96 found here:

https://archives.media.gm.com/us/pow...10truck_us.htm

I have a L92 in my GTO, I ditched VVT and am using the Autokraft pan.

Thanks for the info Andrew. I may ditch the VVT in the future, but due to time constraints, I'm going to leave the VVT alone with the stock pan. It sits a little lower than I'd like, but I'm keeping the stock ride height, so for now, it will suffice. Once I get it back from paint and body and get it to wherever I'm living at the time, I will probably do a little head and came work and try to get it to the 400hp range.

As far as DOD, I was looking at a couple of motors, but some of the horror stories I had read about them, the L96 was the best option at the time. Again, more of a cruiser than a straight line beast.

*On Edit:
I am pretty sure I could figure out a way to make the Autokraft pan work with the VVT, but again, time is not on my side right now.

I think it's a pressure relief valve for the VVT. Not exactly sure how it works, but I believe that's what it is.

I just installed the 302-2 pan (no relief valve) after putting about 5k miles on my L92 (stock) swap with the stock pan.

I've seen as high as 75 psi since installing the new pan (without the relief valve) on my oil pressure gauge at cold startup. Note, for me cold is defined as ambient of at least 60F here in the San Diego area since installing in the Spring '15. And I've not run the truck for three or four days, so I'm sure the engine approached ambient in my garage.

Once warm, the oil pressures are the same as I'd monitored with the stock pan (25psi @ idle and up to 45 or 50 when revving a bit.
If I lived in a cold climate (freezing or below) and planned to drive regularly in the winter, I might think twice about installing that pressure relief plug.

"I will probably do a little head and came work and try to get it to the 400hp range."
Should be an easy goal to hit....
We just finished a L92, {2007 Escalade}, in a 33 Ford roadster. Stock heads, w/ springs, truck intake, very mild cam, VVT limiter, shorty headers, stock ecm, EFILIVE tune by Mike, = 400/400 at the wheels. Pulls were shut down at 6K. {Vengeance Racing dyno}.

Ita a relief valve as mentioned, its not needed and can cause problems. If it releases often it soaks the underside of a couple pistons and cakes up the rings, wrecking the engine. I have an L92 with an f-body pan retaining VVT with no relief and everything has been working fine for years.

I have been looking for info on it's function and it's necessity, but have so far come up with nothing.

It releases if the oil pressure gets too high, similar to a regulator. Most of us delete/remove them entirely.
