Default Starting build 86 Monte

Well, I'm starting a LS swap in my daily driver 86 Monte Carlo SS. Wasn't planning on starting now, but I sold my 350 last night. I will be using a L96? 6.0 out of a 2011 workhorse. I'm planning on using the workhorse ECM and harness and my TH400 trans. I'll be eliminating the VCT and DBW for sure. I'm planning on running a 3 bolt cam with a LS7 front cover. Any help or input would be appreciated! Don't want to do something that won't work. Thanks! Mike

It's starting to look like Christmas haha with all the parts that are appearing on my doorstep. I have a L96 engine and an E78 ECM. I have read enough to make me crosseyed. It seems I can't do what I want to do with what I have.

My questions are

1. Will drive by wire work well with a big cam and a stall converter?

2. Does MegaSquirt or Microquirt work well with the 58x engine and DBC? Or any other aftermarket control systems?

3. Should I just look at carbs?

I am looking at a comp cams Xtreme cam and asheet metal intake. The car has aTH 400 with a 3500 stall, 4.10 gear and 10 inch tires, and will be my summer work car (I drive 7 miles to work).

I picked up my 86 in may. I run stock cars, so most of the metric cars I get are rough. This was a clean southern car with 115k miles. I always said if I found a decent one I would build what I couldn't afford in high school haha. I want to stay injected, but I don't want the electronic throttle.

Keep the dbw go with an ls3 car intake . Vengeance racing makes a killer cam for that motor. Guy dynoed 421 rwhp thru a 4l80 with a vengance cam. Use the holley mounts, headers etc. I went this route on my 83 cutlass

I'm just not sold on dbw. I've driven all kinds of dbw and haven't been impressed. I still want to roast the tires, not so much of the chirp and bog that the stock setup gives. I also don't want to spend tons of time trying to tune the throttle. I don't know of any tuners in the area to help me in that area either.

Nothing wrong with dbw, all newer corvettes and camaros have dbw, and they are plenty quick. A lot of people get scared of them on swaps from compatibility issues from mixing & matching parts, and wiring harnesses and ECM's and operating systems. If you keep everything from the donor vehicle it makes it simple.

I have dbw on my swap and I would never go back to a carb and cable operated accelerator pedal, to me that's like taking out my power windows and installing manual windows, that's what the whole idea of swapping a LS engine is for instead of just rebuilding and using the stock gen 1 small block.

While I haven't had the chance to drive a newer Vette, I have driven newer Camaros, trucks and SUVs, and have never been impressed with the throttle response. Better than a Chrysler, but not what I would call awesome. I want to go, not make a suggestion to the PCM that I want to go. Also TAC module and pedal are not available to me.
I like my manual windows and locks. They work every time I want to use them.

To me that's like saying, when I flip the light switch on in my living room the overhead light doesn't light up fast enough? To each his own, in the end it is your car and you should build it the way that pleases you.

If you want dbc with a 58x reluctor wheel I think you are going to have to go aftermarket pcm .I would ask denmah he uses micro squirt all the time .

Funny you mention that, I just changed all the CFLs in my house for LEDs for that reason

If you tune it there will be no throttle lag. If you have all the stock stuff, wiring etc, I'd say run it with the stock stuff.

My wiring is just connectors for all the sensors. No TAC module or pedal included. I traded my 355 for everything, so I'm really not complaining haha.
