'78 Datsun 280Z LS2/T56 Swap
Hey guys,
I am a little late to the game but have been staying current on the HybridZ site.
http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/1238...80z-ls2-build/
Last June I picked the car up from Seattle, Washington and really wanted to build a LS swapped car. I spent most of the summer driving the car and doing little things here and there while doing some research.
I went ahead and started ripping in to the car November 18th. Boy oh boy has this car been a lot of work but I wouldn't trade it for anything...
Here are some before and after pictures:
Here's a list of what has been completed up to this point:
1978 280Z - 2,560 lb. after swap
- LS2/T56 pullout from an 05 GTO w/ stock harness
- Hawks Third Gen weld in motor and transmission mounts
- C6 LS3 Oil Pan
- Hawks Third Gen Longtube Headers
- Monster Stage 3 clutch w/ 18 lb. flywheel
- 3" Aluminum driveshaft with billet slip yoke - 9 lb.
- Z31T CLSD R200
- Chequered Flag shortened half axles
- Chequered Flag companion flanges
- Tilton 7/8" Clutch MC
- Wilwood 1" Brake MC
- S12W Toyota vented brake upgrade
- 14 gal. Jeg's fuel cell
- Bosch 044 fuel pump
- -8AN fuel lines
- Ground Control weld in coilover kit
- Tokiko Illumina shocks
- 225/250 springs
- Energy Suspension polyurethane bushing kit
- All suspension was sandblasted and primed by brother and painted by me.
- Rota RB-R 17" x 9.5" on all 4 corners
Here are some of the items I plan on doing in the future:
- VRX5 camshaft
- 0.660" Dual Valve Springs with Titanium retainers
- 7.400" Hardened Push Rods
- Trunion bushing upgrade for the rocker arms
- Port and polish LS2 throttle body
- Port and polish LS2 intake
This I hope to have done by July 11th for a scheduled dyno session.
For the picture oriented people, here is my photobucket link:

Maybe down the road I will figure out FI and painting/restoring the car however since I got it running less than a month ago all I've been doing is driving!

Thank bud. She does buck pretty good! It feels just as fast as some heavier supercharged cars I've driven. I am already craving more power but want to focus on handling as I want this to be a wicked corner carver/road car.

Welcome to tech. I like the attention to detail throughout the entire build. There can never be too many LSX swapped S30's. If you hadn't purchased a Trunnion kit yet I'd look into the Straub Technologies Trunnion Kit. It's a rock solid kit. I found the summit racing tool made the install a cake job. (Summit part #SME-906011) The tool works with all the Trunnion kits. Look forward to the rest of your build.

Thanks Nismo. I tried to think every step out prior to doing any work. It is far from perfect but I am happy with it currently. Of course there will always be things I want to change. I think there will never be enough swapped cars like this. They are so few and far in between you're lucky to come across another one.
I did pick up a trunion bushing kit from Vengeance. It has the brass bushing so hopefully there is less wear than the needle bearing kits. Time will tell. as far as the install, I bought a hydraulic press when I rebuild the uprights with new bearings and seals and then the wheel studs too. I picked up a couple big thick washers that will act as my spacers to drop the trunions in. I think I should be safe using this and some sockets to get the old ones out.
Overall I should be cracking in to the cam swap tonight or this weekend. I'm hoping to not have any issues.

At the moment NO, I'm in HybridZ forum too, although I'm not to active there. I will be putting an LQ4 on mine. At the moment buying parts here and there. I will be using Z32 trans. I'm focusing on my suspension at the moment.
