Default Batwing pan questions

The motor I'm putting in my car was in a single turbo Corvette and it has the oil drain for the turbo into the top of one side of the batwing. With the tubular k member on my car (86 Camaro) I think it'll clear. I have 2 questions.

1.Will I have any problems with oil draining since the drain is fairly low in the pan compared to others?

2.Are there any other negatives to the batwing besides the size of it? I know alot of people don't use it because it doesn't fit in a lot of cars

If this pan isn't gonna work I'll probably just get the new holley pan that has the drains cast in

I would think you might have a problem with oil draining if you are in a high G turn & oil is pushing to the side where the drain taps into the pan, possibly even oil pushing up the drain tube....

The main issue is the exhaust clearance. I'm using the vette 02 batwing pan and 02 vette Z06 exhaust manifolds and you can tell the pan was designed to fit the exhaust.
Don't know if many other exhausts will easily clear it.

This is a street/strip car with skinnys in the front so there won't be any high g turns, lol. As for exhaust clearance, no problem there because it's going to be twin turbo with fender exits. I just wanted to get an idea if there were any other issues with it before i spent the time to put a 2nd drain in it

It used to be multicolered, mostly blue, I think it's in his sig...???

He always posts up when someone mentions a batwing pan.

Yup. That would be me. The batwing pan worked very well in my until I lucked into a ls3 dropout from a wrecked c6. I'd probably still be running it, otherwise. The one change I had to make to the pan was adding a second oil drain plug near one of the wing tips, since the original plug pretty much dumped onto the frame/k member.

Copy/pasted from my build thread:

Oil Pan I originally used a 5th gen corvette batwing oil pan. My engine dropped right in, with the original TH350 (now gone) bolted to the factory stock trans cross member, in the factory stock location. I have solid engine mounts, which are welded to my frame. I did have to make a little mod in order to drain the oil without making a big mess (see pic).

Yellow arrow = new drain plug location. I brazed in some additional "meat," filed the area flat, and then tapped a 7/16 hole. The bolt has an O-ring and doesn't leak a drop.

Red arrow = original drain plug. With the engine installed, there is not enough clearance from the frame to get the bolt out. I could have chopped the bolt, but then I'd be dealing with oil all over the frame with every change. Ugh.

Can one of you folks advise me as to where I should start looking for a nice bat-wing Corvette oil pan to fit an LS3 project I'm working on? Thanks for any help.

The "wing" portion is the sump. It's a low spot in the system, that's a poor place for a drain, period. YOu need to be well above the oil level.

Default Bat Wing Oil Pan + LS-7 "mag" Bolt Drain

Hi All, I too like the "BAT WING" pan.

I can provide this oil pan, a used item, in perfect condition with the LS-7 drain plug.
This is the best pan for road racers.

The cost would be low to LS-1 tech members.

Above the oil level for a drain plug? His location is perfect for drain plug.

Thought I was Answering his question about a turbo oil draining with the wording below... my mistake.

That's what I thought. The guy was running it that way in his car but I think I'm just gonna get a different pan. I'm thinking maybe an autokraft or that new holley pan that already has the drains cast in(only problem is they're kinda small 1/2" I think)

I think I've decided to just cap the existing drain and have 2 new bungs welded into the side of the pan up front. That'll save me $500 off buying a new pan
