Type 2 power steering low presssure line size
Guys,
I need some info on the size of the typical low pressure line for a GM Type 2 power steering pump.
I am using -6 AN for the high pressure side and a -6 AN at the rack for the low pressure but the -6 AN hose doesn't fit over the "barb" plastic fitting on the type 2 reservoir.
I measured and go that the diameter is about .391. Someone said it was 3/8 but with the barb is it bigger....
So my question is will -8 AN fit over that hose barb on the pump?
Thanks.

I'd skip the AN hose and use plain old hydraulic hose, it will be easier to handle and won't scratch stuff up, I only use a AN hose when its a pressure issue.
If you want the look, you can buy a stainless braided sheath or black plastic braid to slide over the return and save a buck or two.. Steal Braided hose is NOT meant to be sealed with a clamp..
If you use the AN with a clamp be sure to buy the hose end ring to protect it from fraying,, Goodrich sells them, keeps you from getting jabbed when servicing the car.. AN SizeMetal Tube O.D.Thread Size-6 AN3/8"9/16" - 18 SAE-8 AN1/2"3/4" - 16 SAE-10 AN5/8"7/8" - 14 SAE-12 AN3/4"1-1/16" - 12 SAE

I don't know why anyone gets concerned about the P/S return line. Under NO pressure at all. It just moves oil back to the tank..... The pressure line is another story....

Yep, typical for hydraulic systems, and these are far from the higher pressures seen on many systems.
I think some think these are a closed loop system with pressure on both sides as both hoses look the same on some cars. P/S systems are the simplest systems out there plumbing-wise.

I like electric. My 2013 F150 has it. The feel isn't bad, maybe a little numb, but hey, it's a truck!

8-10 years ago when they started showing up OEM they were terrible. No feel. Wandering on straight aways. Poor lag response. Today - much, much better. Both our dailies have electric -- great feel, not overboosted, very responsive. Have investigated switching Volvo over to electric.

It's gotta be a cleaner install than hydraulic! NO pump, NO hoses, NO fluid leaks. Just wire it...

I have to be dead honest- I never looked to see where the assist gear was! I ASSUMED it was still down near the steering gear! lol
Once the after market catches up there will be a simple solution to retrofitting it, be assured.

LOTS of people are already retrofitting it -- for years now. Aftermarket already offering controllers to allow tailoring boost and feel. And I should say 'most' mount as part of the steering column -- there are some where the electric assist is built into the rack - but those are much bigger racks - again, real estate.

So if you are using an Fbody stock pump you can use "typical" non Teflon lined steel braided for the return. I've done that number of times. You need to kind of expand the-6 line so it fits over the return barb of the resievor Takes a bit of wiggling and lube but it does work.. I just use a standard hose clamp to secure.

The ONLY reason for steel braid on the return is LOOKS only, as ANYTHING will work. It is a low-stress hose assignment.
