Got the trans tunnel finished today. Looks good and I’m actually surprised how much room there still is. I bolted the seat back in and mocked up the shifter position. I had to change thing alittle on the drivers side to make room for the shift shaft on the trans.

Took me a few days, but I got the trans tunnel welded up. I'm working on getting some headers to fit now. I ordered some block hugger headers that should be here Monday, but the more I look at it I might just be better off making my own long tube headers. I got the steering mocked up and there isn't much room for anything else.

I have a brand new set of block hugger header from thinking they would work. They don’t hug the block nearly like I was hoping.

I'm actually hoping the ones I bought don't hug that block tight. Your steering is set-up alittle different than mine I think because of the rack your using. Your steering runs close to the frame and mine come out of the rack close to the pan and hugs the block all the way to the firewall. I need headers that will go between the steering shaft and the frame instead of the steering shaft and the block. I don't have a picture of it now, but that's the best I can explain it. It's still going to be a very tight fit. I may end up notching the frame rail. That's what I did on my last car.

It’s the frame that was the problem for me and the headers I was trying to use. Hopefully it’s not the case but from memory if your plan is to notch the frame you might have to notch the whole width of the frame. Mine weren’t even close to fitting in-between the frame rails and from the looks of it your engine might sit lower which will makes it even worse. Best of luck with them.

I wasn't thinking about the whole length of the header not clearing the frame. If that's the case I defiantly won't use them. Not sure what kit you got to build your headers, but this is the kit I was looking at.

This is how my last one was set-up. Block hugger on the right and a third gen Camaro shorty on the left. I just had to notch the frame.

The two middle runners were hitting really bad on my Block huggers headers. So bad I’m thinking the top of the flange was a good .5” off the block. The long tubes I made I just pieced together from Summit brand parts.

I got my headers today and I think I can make them work. The passengers side will bolt up but it just rubs the frame rail. Slight clearancing of the rail should fix that. The drivers side touches the rail and also drops down right where my steering shaft will be. I think I can cut off the collector and reangle it out and get enough clearance.

Dang... There's more room for headers in the Chevette than there was in my SBC-equipped Olds Starfire Firenza!!

I bet that if GM had offered Chevettes with V8s, they sure as hell would've sold more of 'em - but that probably would've been offset by all of the warranty techs who would've abruptly walked off the job when V8 Chevettes came out...

Waddayamean? A 350 SBC with a TH350 and even a 10-bolt rear would have been BULLETPROOF! The only warranty claims would have been the blown Corvette and Camaro engines trying to keep up with those wicked Chevettes! Chevette…. the OTHER Vette..... lol

Chevy did play with a 2.8 v6 Chevette, and axed it because it was too close to the Camaro and was worried it would take sales away from that . Ahh the GM hierarchy.

Yesterday I worked on getting the headers to fit. All I had to do with the passengers side was trim the corner off the frame rail.

Drivers side required about the same. Except the way the collector is pointing it runs straight into the steering.

I cut off the V band flange and the collector and reangled it so it dropped straight down between the steering and the frame.

I found a bearing on McMaster Carr that should work to center the bottom of the steering shaft in the column. I noticed once I cut down the column the steering shaft just kind of flopped around in the column. The one thing I can't get figured out is how I want to mount the pedals. When I have the brake pedal where I want it, the steering column is in the way of the gas pedal. I think the gas pedal is going to need some reshaping to fit.

I may just take a break on that stuff and start on the 4 link and mini tub.

Those headers worked out really good. Mine weren’t so hugging I guess.

I guess I got lucky. I was prepared for the worst after you were telling me about the problems you had with them. I still want to build a set of 1 3/4" long tubes for it sometime, maybe next winter.

I got the motor and trans pulled back out again last night so I can start to finish welding everything. I manage to get the top of the firewall finished last night. I was originally going to keep it white, but last night I was thinking blue might look good too. I have probably enough C6 Corvette Lemans blue left over to paint the engine bay.
