Default Carb'd Gen III V-8's?

Hey guys, I normally post in the truck forum but this seemed like the right place for this one. I recently picked up a '00 5.3 motor out of a Silverado. I got it nearly free from a buddy. It fell prey to nitrous. Anyways looks like it just needs one new pistion.

I read in Hot Rod magazine this week that GM Performance Parts and Edelbrock have both come out with new intakes for carb'd LS1's. I thought this might be a good way to make use of the 5.3. I don't even have a car for this project yet. I'm leaning toward a mid-80's Camaro, Monte Carlo, or El Camino. A Nova would be cool too. Anyways I don't know what type of transmission choices I'll have? Also what type of clearance problems are usually associated with the swapes you guys do? Will F-body headers work in most applications?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm just trying to find out what I'd be getting into with this project.

Originally it had the 4l60E, and the flex plate is still attached. I just didn't know if I'd be able to make the work without electronics, I'm not very knowledgable on this subject as you can tell. A six speed might be cool.

Thanks for the reply.

you would need some way to handle the spark, a crank trigger or something.they have standalone computers for the electronic trannies(mad$$). a stick would be more fun or a 200r4 or TH shifts on vacuum no clue on the headers. i would gather some parts intake injectors, etc and keep the fuel injection on it though.

I think those carb setups are not really out yet, otherwise folks would be posting results. My guess is that the MSD part of the equation is still not out, they seem to take a very long time to roll out products.

thanks guys, looks like I just have to decide what to put it in now. Oh and I still have to fix the motor, lol.

My understanding is that without the fuel injection I can run a cam with a lower lsa. Is this correct? Anyone got a suggestion on what a good cam with great lowend and midrange would be? Or even an all around cam? If this project gets going it will be a street car with ocasional 1/4 mile runs at test & tune. Might become more down the road.
