TECH Regular
I seriously considered using one in my 59 Corvette project last year, but when i found out how rare and expensive parts are for them, I quickly changed my mind! I ended up using a LS1 instead. The supply of spare parts are dissapearing rapidly for these LT5 engines, and there is no source for new parts. I have heard of water pumps bringing in excess of $2000! They rate very high on the old cool meter, but I am not sure how you are ever going to be able to keep one running in the future without expending huge ammounts of money.

Hey, amean94ta, is that car from Erie? That's my hometown, and I go back every summer. I'd like to see that car next year.
BTW, that stuff about $2,000.00 waterpumps for the LT5 is You can find all you want for $200.00 or less. The ZR1 owners are a pretty tight group, lots of parts support and tech info available. Check out:

One real downside to the LT5 is the cost of mods. Top-end porting can easily top $8,000.00 But that gives you a smooth, 500+h.p. with stock cams, etc.
Another downside is weight, an LT5 is easily 150+lbs. heavier than an LS1/LS6.
But the motor is virtually bulletproof. Check all the endurance records it set in the 90's. ( stock motor=speeds in the 180's-190's. averaged 175+ for 24hrs! ) I'm waiting for an LS7 to top that. Plus, there is no sound like an LT5 at 7k rpms, ZR1's scream like no other Chevy.
Another upside is looks, judging from your reaction to that splitwindow, you agree. IMO, the LT5 is the best looking engine Chevy ever put in a car. When I pop my hood, there's no "tupperware" on display.

No...you are wrong....
In the mid-80's, General Motors and its Corvette Division approached Group Lotus in Great Britain with the idea of developing the world's fastest production car. From that collaboration came the Lt5 engine, an aluminum-block V-8 with the same bore as the standard (L98) 350ci displacement unit, but with 375 horsepower. To accomplish this power boost, the new block featured four overhead camshafts and 32 valves. The LT5s were built by Mercury Marine in Oklahoma and assembled into the ZR-1 vehicle at Bowling Green
