LS1 Power Steering Pump, will it work on an older box?
I'm assuming that when I finally get my LS1 into my 68 chevy pickup, the power steering pump will work alright with my stock power steering gear. Does anyone have experience with this. I mainly just want to know if I have to change the pulley size to change the pressure output. If the pressure is too high, I don't want it to blow out the seals on my box.

The LS1 pump will have too much pressure, even with a pulley change. I got a kit, from S&P I think,to install in the pump to reduce pressure and also they have adapters for the metric to SAE threads. About $30.00 for both if I remember right.

I'll have to try that out. I'm not too concerned about the thread difference since I will have a new hose made. I will have to get that pressure change part. What exactly was it and how did it install? Was it time consuming?

Part # 1001 and it comes with instructions. Not sure how hard to install as I'm not that far along in my swap yet. I'm pretty sure it was around $10.00 though.

Does anyone know what the pressure/flow specs are on the pump? I was figuring on using it on my system, so I need to figure out if it's close to working. I've got to feed both a steering rack and hydraulic assist power brakes <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

I'd be careful about using the LS1 pump (or any pump meant for r & p) with any steering box for the simple fact that rack and pinion systems use a lot higher pressure than "box" equipped vehicles do. It would work, but I think you'd end up blowing the seals on the gear box, like Machine68 was asking about.

Same here, as far as I know the chevelle's box is original, and I'm using a vette pump...works great.

Re: LS1 Power Steering Pump, will it work on an older box?
I talked to Mark at S&P and asked him about this part to reduce the pressure so I could use an older box and he said the pump would work no problem with an older box. I don't need to add anything. I wonder why we are getting different answers from the same company. I guess I'll hook it up and see what happens. John
