I assume you want to keep your car FWD. If so, this is a very difficult swap, with many special parts required. Both a Monte Carlo SS and a Impala SS with LS1 engines have been shown in Hot Rod, as well as other magazines. One car was built by Wheel to Wheel for GM Performance, and the others were built in house at GM. I was part of the group that built the first one, and a few of the others. It makes a nice package in either car, but not one that most people could build. There are many "custom" parts, including the block (the 4T65E has a different bolt pattern than the LS1), oil pan, front cover, water pump, starter, exhaust manifold (rear), wiring harness, PCM software, and many others. All of these parts were made custom made for this application, and are not available anywhere else that I know of.

The cars perform well, 13.69 @106 on 245/45R17's, in a Monte Carlo. I heard Wheel to Wheel was working on a kit to install a LS1 into these cars, but I do not know that for sure. If there is a kit, it will be expensive, and there will still be a lot of fabrication required.

I've often thought of that exact car project. This is no ordinary engine swap. No doubt it will be expensive, but you would end with a Monte Carlo the way Chevy should have made it.

No particular reason to keep it FWD. Get an AME bumper to bumper Profile chassis and convert the car to RWD. You'll end up cutting out the firewall, floor, and much of the trunk. Say $30-40K in costs if you do it yourself. Triple that to pay someone. You'd have an awesome, one-of-a-kind vehicle!

There's a write up in GM High Tech Magazine

of the Jon Moss buildup. Doesn't sound very easy to do the swap. Custom billet made water pump and a whole lot of other pieces.

You may be better off just buying the GTO and save yourself the effort.
