While I was putting away some stock at a local Parts store I work at, a Thermostat fell out of the box and as I was looking it over, I saw that the base was very similar to a stock LS1 housing but had a straight neck.
The Brand that we carry is the MotoRad. It was part number #538-187 and I looked at a stock one for a LS1, #379-187 and figured I do a little research.

The Thermostat inside the two are different but the housing and how it mounts the thermostat look the same and have the same dimensions. I knew from past trials that the inner can be removed from the housing and that the LS1 stat most likely could be put into the straight neck housing.

So if you need a straight neck housing, use the 538-187 and swap the inner stat from your LS1 housing.

I still have not gotten around to trying this, but in looking at both.. Its should work.. let you know once I get around to trying this.

I also did a little research and see that the LS1 Housing/Stat comes in three different temp's.. 187, 180 and 160. So.. why buy a costly Hypertech (or other brands) one when you could buy these for a much lower cost.
These are MotoRad parts #
187* = 379-187
180* = 379-180
160* = 379-160

I also found what might be a cause for over heating. Some thermostat's have a weep hole with a brass rivet in it. If the weep hole and rivet is not at the 12 o'clock position when mounted, the thermostat will not allow steam/air to escape and cause a air pocket.

Here are a few pictures of the two to compare.

That looks like a thermostat and housing from a Colorado. Never tried it on an LS though.

Jegs sells a straight billet thermostat housing that uses a gen 1 thermostat for $50. I have one on my engine. Nice piece.
