Default Megasquirt & MSD 6010 Box to control everything to run LS1? (no factory harness/pcm)

I actually believe it can and plan on trying but maybe someone has any insight into what im in the middle of doing on an ls1 conversion on a friends pre-smog car...

The MSD 6010 Box is $250
Megasquirt is around $300 with everything. That is less than I would be paying just for a LS1 harness/pcm, having it reworked (like speartech) and then upgrading to HPtuners /w 3 bar map sensor for boost... etc...

I didnt want to use a factory ls1 harness/pcm really since its an ls1 swap old car.

I was thinking of using megasquirt to control all my fueling/injectors etc. I will tie it in with my wideband o2 and a 3bar map sensor for boost. Megasquirt will connect to the throttle body and read IAC and TPS etc as well.

The MSD 6010 box runs all the timing/rpm ignition controls for the motor. It has a fully laptop programmable timing curve that includes reading up to a 3 bar map sensor for boost controlled timing.... Its intended

I then wouldnt need a OBDII port etc and could use my laptop to fully run everything from megasquirt and MSD pro data+ software...

Any thoughts on anything I'm missing? I think it'll do everything I need it to for this ls1 conversion.

any problems forseen?

i built an engine for a friend that has done what u are trying to do
but then went with the ms2 and 36-1 trigger wheel with a v r sensor using ford coils i dont remember the part numbers but it was a reluctor/pulsator ring from a v6 mustang in conjuction with a vr sensor form a ford escort
controlled with the megasquirt.
the car is turbo with a t76 370 ci LSx that put down 750rwhp on 12psi
using 60lb injectors,
he also runs pressure switch alky inj.
i will try to get a hold of him and get any further info and post up

Whoa...that sounds a little different.

I havent used a 36-1 trigger wheel or vr sensor etc so Im not sure how that stuff works in with the ls1 stuff. I just planned on using the factory ls1 sensors etc...

I ran a MS controller on a TPI motor. It worked well and was easy to use, but I had a hard time getting a really good tune out of it. I would say the drawback would be the ablility to take it to a Dyno shop and having it tuned on a dyno. I've also heard it can be difficult to make an LS1 idle desent, since the engine has very little friction. That's just my two cents.

Megasquirt is no problem at all on a laptop...parish and several other have ran it on high hp boosted setups.... The msd box only makes it run and controls timing curve which is programmable just like hptuners. Also it will read up to 3 bar map and is boost controllable timing...

Hmmmmmm i can see it being a little hard because no one else is doing it..but it think other than that it should be doable...

Idle is true..it may be rough to get it to idle right with the MS controlling the IAC...

keep me up to date with this cuz I have the msd 6010 and wanted a differenet route than the HPtuners just for the sake of being different and maybe this could be the ticket

I'm almost positive that this would be the simplest, almost plug and play way to contol a GenIII engine. The only thing that I can think of that would need to be checked into would be an rpm source for the MS ECM. I'm not familiar with the outputs of the MSD box but I'm sure there would be one for a tach output that you would just use for the MS ECM.

How much boost do you plan on running?

I'm running a MS box on my truck and for the money it can't be beat. You would have to go with a MSII setup so that you have IAC.

What do you plan on doing for trans control?

If anyone's interested in using the 36-1 wheel and Ford EDIS, this is a good post for info:

well the ring is pressed to the balancer and only requires the pickup bracket for the vr sensor, the factory "dist hole" and crank sensor are plugged with a stock sensor but of course they are just dummy.
the reason he went with setup is because of the multiple spark feature from the msd coils, and also timing launch control that is afeature of the ms2 system,in all i believe he paid less than$600 for tha entire setup, hell i even think he got the necessary sensors at autozone

15-18 psi is the goal for the horsepower I want to make...

Tranny = Transbrake TH-400...no problems there...

The MSD box has a tach output that can be fed right into the MS. One thing to be mindful of, the MSD box is a little "lazy" to fire the coils. It takes a full revolution of the engine for it to determine its position and then it will start to spark. The MSD box is also sensitive to voltage drops and does not like a big voltage drop while cranking.

Could you MegaSquirt N Spark it and get rid of the MSD box totally?

yes thats what i was trying to say
a friend of mine is puttin some power down with a MS2 system
and using ford oem sensors for ignition control

Yes as long as you went with the Ford eDIS setup. The MegaSquirt N Spark does not have the ability to work with the stock LS1 ignition coils and trigger wheel.

It is nice to see interest in this application. I just finished building my MegaSquirt kit - about $200 for the ECU and 4 hours of fun. I plan on using the tach output of the MSD box to trigger the MS for now for fuel control only. If you want to deal with mounting a trigger wheel on the balancer, there are lots of ignition possibilities. I believe that the FAST EDIS will trigger the 8 coils from a common MSD flying magnet or the Holley hall effect wheel. With wide band sensors so inexpensive, a true budget management system is available for the DIY.

Interesting, the algorithyms to read off of the LSx crank trigger and the ability to pull off the hall effect sensor aren't really too difficult, I may have to look into adding to the MS project.

Yeah, this is the same exact setup Im going to be doing to control my LS1/240Z project. I looked into the 36-1 wheel/VR sensor but the problem I saw was the stock LS1 dampner is not pinned in one spot. So it MIGHT spin on the crank and throw your timing all outta whack and I didnt want to risk it. Nevermind I liked the way the LS1 coil on plug setup looks and didnt want to run long ignition wires.

Keep us updated, it will probably be a while before I get that far with my project and I would like to see any kind of setbacks you hit so I can avoid them myself.

I think I'll just start with the MSD setup and see where it gets me. I'll bolt a carb on the car to get it fired up and running, then switch over to MS with EFI after its working fine.

Its not too tough at all, if you want the pattern just ask. I've put it to hardware on the bench, but not put it on the car yet. With a crank set up on the bench it triggers and tracks perfectly. The LS1 crank wheel is pretty nifty - trigger on one edge of the pulse, and you get a steady 24x per revolution. Trigger on the opposite edge, and you get 4 unique pulse patterns 90 degrees wide.

My board/code does dwell on-board, and basically throws out the dwell (pulse width) from the MS. It uses the trailing edge of the MS spark output for timing, and acts like an electronic distributor. FWIW, this is basically how the vaporware "router board" from the MS folks is supposed to work as well, but I think they were talking about sending dwell info to the router board via CAN.

Have you found time again to work more on the ls1 MS ignition control?

I right now im using the ford edis on my ls1 but soon switching to the wheel decoder code.
