Default GTO LS1 into a 3rd gen F-body

I might be looking at a 04 LS1/T56 set-up out of a GTO. Can anybody here that's worked with the GTO motors tell me if Is it just the oil pan that needs swapped out to fit into a 3rd gen (rear sump)? I hear the shifter location is different on the T56 also....is that easy to change over? Any insight you can provide will be helpful.

Thanks
James

the awnser to your questions is this. the oil pan and pick up tube need to be changed over to an fbody oil pan and pickup tube.(be careful when torqueing down the rear bolts on the oil pan they tend to break extremely easy)

now the t56 shifter is different on the gto's than the fbody t56 they sit even farther back and are made of complete plastic. at my dealer we have had a few people come in with broken shifters due to racing them. and new shifter assemblys are a grand. lol. so i have no idea what the solution would be for putting the gto t56 in a thirdgen. i did an 2000 ls1/t56 in my 92.

The only solution for the shifter would be to change the tailshaft section to an fbody tailshaft section. Should fit, the core trans is still the same. Just a suggestion, could check with some tranny shops to see if that'll work.

Thanks for the info.

It looks like you could just swap out the shifter assembly on the GTO trans to make it work with the f-body???

The shifter mount is in the same location as the F-Body. The goat uses an adapter that moves the shifter back 3-4 inches.

The T56 in the GTO is a M12. The gear ratios are the same as the Z06 'Vette.

That's what I was thinking, they just used that nylon/plastic mount to space it rearward.

Yep, we get the 2.97 1st gear. That's why the goat's are basically like a 3.90 geared F-Body, except 4th of course

Nice! Is the clutch set-up the same as the f-body?

For the shifter, you will need a gmm ripshift shifter, specific for the gto trans. The only bad thing is they are 300 bucks. They are a nice shifter and locates it in the same place as the f-body. The handles are different. A f-body shifter will not work easily.
