5.3L Swap Into 1969 C10 5.3L / 4L60E into 1969 Chevy Pickup. I helped out with the wiring harness and PCM programming on this truck, thought I'd share some pictures. The project turned out very nice. http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_side1.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_side2.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_side3.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_engine1.jpg Battery has been relocated to drivers side for air filter fitment, also, PCM is mounted below the battery tray, to hide it. http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_engine2.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_engine3.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_ac2.jpg A/C Compressor fits with very small notch to frame. http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/kelly_69_ac1.jpg |
No kidding, looks really nice. Very factory looking install :) |
Now that is sharp! What intake setup is that, and what kind of IATs do you get with that setup? |
I've had a few emails with questions, I'll answer a few here. Headers are a used set of BBK Mustang 79-93 Fox Body headers with the ford flange chopped off, and a LSx Gen III flange welded on. Mounts are Transdapt type for LSx into factory V8 chassie Radiator and shroud are factory for the 69 C10, the stock 5.3 fan fits perfectly inside the shroud. Air intake is the same kit K&N sells for a 99+ truck with a 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 |
The pics don't seem to make it too clear - are those longtube headers? If so, I think I know what I'm getting the truck for Christmas ;) |

If so, I think I know what I'm getting the truck for Christmas ;) No, they are shorty's Any old ford header will work, as long as it clears frame and transmission. Here's a ford truck header up to the LSX heads. This should be good news for people with LSx's in mustangs. http://www.lt1swap.com/vortec6000/fordhedder.jpg Here's the first set I made. The guy with the truck above made his same way I made mine. http://www.lt1swap.com/vortec6000/drivers_header.jpg http://www.lt1swap.com/vortec6000/passanger_header.jpg Another set I made, well one of them. http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/53engine.jpg |
Just wondering if you could give just alittle more info on the headers... 1. where did you get the flanges from? 2. how did you un-rectangle the header pipes near the ford flange. In the pictures you can hardly tell they wern't round originaly. Thanks Graham |
Actually another question. How come your going to a 5.3 from the 6.0 and why not using Megasquirt anymore? (auto trans control?) hopefuly this will be soon remidied by the GPIO board. |
Headers are a Mustang 1979-1993 factory replacement , they would bolt in place of factory header. To open up the ports, I used a torch to heat up the ports red hot, and I used a peice of round steel stock just smaller then the tubes, and drove it into the pipes with a hammer. The flanges you can find on ebay usually. I've seen them as cheap as $25 a set up to $75 a set. This is an identical set to the ones I used: (this is a completed auction) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MUSTA...QQcmdZViewItem GMPP sells the flanges, GM Part# 12480130 $22.00 each |

I'm did use Megasquirt on the 5.3L, I ran pure ethanol in it that I made with a home made still. I only ran it on the engine stand with the ethanol. Thats why you see GM DIS coil packs on the engine pics above. I am running stock PCM now for auto trans control, that and I have the TunerCat OBD2 software to mess around with it. If it wasnt for having that, I'd be using Megasquirt. Megasquit is going on a Big Block Chevy I'm working on, 489 inch, sold roller motor....still don't know what its going in. |
Nice truck this is my next project. 71-72 shortbed. Are you done with the truck? Tires & wheels? |

Nice project I wish I could just finish mine ... |
Have another question for ya busta9876, Did you do anything special for the variable vane compressor to work with the stock A/C Graham |
I'm not sure what was done, I think its all stock 85 model a/c with the newer compressor. I'll have to talk to the guy who owns the truck. |
I too would like to know all the detail on the a/c, did he use the 73 up firewall box and all? |
ac evap core is 84 model, so are accumulator, orfice tube...rubber lines are custome made. He bought the fittings and crimped the lines with tool you can rent at parts store. Used 134a fittings in line.. |
