Default First impressions...LS7 FD3S

Well, I've been running for the past month but I haven't reported on my car because of a pesky overheating problem and a hard to control oil leak. With the bugs worked out, I took it out on the streets for the past couple of days. All I can say is WOW. This was supposed to be my more reliable, daily driver car. My fast car is my 280Z with a twin turbo V8. While the Datsun is faster, the Mazda certainly gives it a run for the money. I have a Katech LS7 Torquer cam in it and the combo is supposed to give about 608 HP at a ridiculously low RPM. I believe it. What's great is how streetable the Mazda is. I'm sure it would pull away from the Datsun at first. No contest after that but there is no way I could stand to drive the Datsun day to day. What an awesome swap. I'll put up a video early next week. To celebrate, I'm going fishing in Wyoming over them next few days.

Well, these aren't very recent, but here's the latest photos I have of the RX7.

As you can see, it fits in there better than in an F Body, if the F Body were ever to have come with an LS7. Actually, it is an LS7 based shortblock I got from Scoggins that was set up for a wet sump. The car was saved from the crusher by me--it had a tiny amount of body damage and I thought it would be a shame to see it go to waste. I drove it around as a rotary for about 3 years. Then I met you guys and discovered the awesomeness of the LS motors. The swap was completed in just 4 months, with 2 months of that time sitting idle waiting for LS7 heads. I worked on it after work and it really wasn't hard.

This, on the other hand, was hard.

That's a 1976 280Z with a Chevy 383 and 2 Buick turbos. It took me 3 years and several configurations of the turbo plumbing to get it to work. It's pretty fast though.

Well as a matter of fact.....I'm having a difficult time passing emissions because of visible smoke. I may have to tear into the engine. If it's too much work, I may just get a Warhawk block since it has mounting points for a SBC, so I wouldn't have to change all that much. OK, quit dreaming .

no need for a Warhawk, a forged 6.0 with stock heads will work just fine.
hell, the heads dont even have to be ported, just some strong valve springs
and studs. a member on here made over 900 rwhp with stock 317 6.0
heads and a large turbo thru an auto trans. the motor is a 408 ci

nitrorocket on here made 850rwhp on 93 pump with a stock displacement ls1, stock crank, stage 2 or 3 tea 5.3 heads, little 224/228 cam, and twin 61mm turbos with a2a ic & th400/12 bolt combo. no need to go the high dollar route unless you plan on making a lot more power than that.

craigslist and nopistons.com are also possibilites, but rx7club is your best bet. Just be patient and wait for the right chassis at the right price. One suggestions I'd offer is get a 94-95 chassis if possible since they have better interior parts. The interior plastics on the 93s are super flimsy and UNGODLY expensive to find in good shape. It would not be hard at all to spend $1k replacing stupid little broken interior bits. Automatic chassis are also usually a bit cheaper and they have 3.90 gears instead of the 4.10s that come with manual cars. The numerically higher gears aren't very necessary in a 350+ rwhp 2800lb car and it's not hard to run out of gear in the quarter with 4.10s when you start running decent trap speeds.

How well has his engine held up? That's impressive but I wonder how it's handling it.
