Default LS1/5.3/6.0 in a 1965 Chevy truck

Hi, this is my first post here, although I've been reading for a while.

I've got a 1965 Chevy shortbed truck, about 3 years ago I took out the small block and Th350 and put in what I thought was a 454 and Th400. (I got the 454 and Th400 from a 1974 Chevy truck I bought just for the drivetrain) turns out it may be a 396 big block, I was planning on building a 496 stroker from a 454.

Anyways, it just doesnt have the power or driveablity I hoped for.

At the time of the swap, I ended up getting a 99 Corvette, and loved the power and driveability/reliability it has.

I've been wanting to get either a LS1 and 4L60-E, or a 6.0 and 4L60-E, but have been reading a 5.3 is a lot cheaper than either.

I would like to have good power, and maybe the 5.3 with 4L60-E would be enough?

Nothing crazy, it's not a sports car, mainly a daily driver, but still like to get on it here and there.

For what it will cost to either build my 396 up, or get a 502 crate engine, I could have the modern stuff with better mpg.

The big block went in before the 3.00 a gallon buisness, so that's also changed my mind about big blocks!

I'm near Phoenix, does anyone know where to buy a good LS1 type engine and transmission, and what kind of prices would you expect to pay?

If I do this, any idea on what the running 396 and Th-400 turn key setup would go for if I sell it?

Thanks, Mike

By the way, my wife thinks I'm nuts for wanting to anther swap, she said "you already put a better engine and transmission in that truck, why do you want to do this again?"

I said "because a LS1 engine will be more fun, and get better mpg" , she rolled her eyes
