Need a FWD manual transmission for an LSx
I am looking at power options for a open-wheeled car to compete at the Pike's Peak International Hillclimb. Pushrod engines are highly favored so I'd like to use one. I'd like to mount the engine behind the driver but can't afford a purpose-built transaxle and I don't like the idea of using an old Porsche 'box and conversion kit. I'd also like to mount the engine transversely. I know about the LS4 but I don't believe that it is available with a manual transmission. I need a true manual, not an electronically shifted auto. Do I have any options?

I doubt there is a FWD trans out there that will mount to the LS1. Your best bet would be an engine trans adapter. What comes to mind is the route taken by Fiero guys.
Check out what this guy did.

First thought that comes to my mind is to see if you can use an adapter plate to mate the engine up to a transaxle from a late-60s Toronado... I'd guess that that would be able to take the torque (esp. in a lightweight car), but I don't know if you'd need/want more than three speeds...
Good luck, I'd like to see it run!
(OK, scratch that, I looked right past where you said you wanted a manual trans.)

Gardner Douglas in the UK build kit cars and use various LS motors in their builds.
They use some sort of Porsche Transaxle in those.

An LSx will not mount up to the Pontiac F40 6 speed, but there is a kit out there to use it. That tranny is also your best bet strength wise for a transverse drivetrain setup. Contact Archie at http://www.v8archie.com/ I do not see any info listed on his website, but he does offer the conversion kit for the Fiero crowd.

How about the LS4 and an aftermarket trans controller with paddle shifters? I would think an auto would work as long as you could up/downshift immediately on demand.

However, I like the F40 idea. Will be looking into that.

Do some searching on Pennocks Fiero Forum.

We haven't found a manual trans that can take any abuse. If you want a manual trans the Porsche is your best bet.
