Default 4.8 + 5spd 4X4 into 3rd gen

'01 4.8l LS series vortec + a 5.3 M5 4X4 transmission into a '85 Z28

Will I need a '01 harness or is painless the best way to go?

Can a 4x4 transmission be used in a RWD application or do I need a 2WD tailhousing?

tell me what I need, thanks

You will need a 2wd tailhousing and most likely have to change the output shaft (I know for the auto transes the output shaft is different from the 2wd/4wd so I would assume the manual would also have 2 diff output shafts)

For the wiring you could go either way

4x4 output shafts are shorter. Depending on what trans you have, it may not accept an output shaft housing from a two wheel drive tranny.
I'd say your best bet is to sell the tranny and transfer case and buy a car transmission.
