I'd look into a TVS off of a LS9 before a cam.

Love the build! Didn't know about this engine before I found this thread. I have a question, and apologize if it has been covered and I missed it. If someone got one of these and did not want to run the cam phaser, could the gear and cam be replaced with standard units? Such as the ls2 timing set and oil pump, and some cam like an ls6 cam? This engine is interesting to me because it would get me the short block I want (hopefully) and the heads I want at the same time. I am interested in putting on a standard timing cover, regular cam, and f-body style accessories. Thanks and great build!

yes. Some people ditch the VVT and replace it with ls2 cover and cam of there choice you can get these LY6s about the same price or even CHEAPER like the thread starter & myself did .

That is great news! I was worried where the extra oil passages would be for the phaser thing. I know they work off oil pressure between 2 passageways, and hoped the old style cam would cover all the holes. If it does then this will def be the engine for my Thunderbird.

So, this is considered a gen 4 engine, right?

not without the use of the dakota digitabl box.. I want it working using the ECU - still working on it... gonna try latest beta version of HP Tuners when I can.

Nice build and clean install.

You said your brother did the wiring, he wouldn't happen to have any pin outs would he? I got a ly6/4l80 I'm putting into a Toyota and have been working on the wiring. I can't really find anything usful on the E38 wiring pin outs.

pillagenburn hows the car running ever get the speedo kinks resolved?

also you can still use my wide band if you need.

Yes. Ditching ythe VVT would move the WP close to the timing cover.(like NON VVT engines.)

This thread is motivating! Question: Can I use any wiring harness granted both vehicles have the same motor (ly6)?? I would assume that it should be fine..

got it mail order tuned, speedo didnt end up working because of the fact that I'm using the transmission from a 2004 GTO, specifically, but I haven't tried latest betas from hptuners. As far as dyno, there isn't a dyno in my county or any neighboring counties so I'm kinda screwed unless I want to drive 60-70 miles to Vengeance Racing (which I have no time for). I just swapped the radiator out because mine had a crack in the plastic so that was a bunch of fun. I did a C5 front brake swap and now the car feels like a REAL sports car... also, surprisingly, after I put some Pfadt 1/2" spacers on, the car feels like it corners a lot better. The car is simply amazing... though you really have to be awake to drive it - in terms of bolt-ons, it pretty much has EVERYTHING you could possibly do to it. I'm contemplating a cam swap instead of a supercharger just because then I still get to keep using 87 octane gas and I wouldn't have to use a huge cam to see massive benefits (40rwhp gains or something crazy like that). It's still an on-going project but it's daily drivable and has been for some time now.

about like a LS1... high teens in the city, high twenties on the highway... all on 87 octane.

Why is no one doing this to 4th gens?????

After reading this post, I'm really considering it on mine. Got a '94 Camaro sitting in my driveway that I'm putting an LS V-8 swap into this spring. Your build has really got me thinking LY6, but I'm already planning on using a 4L-80E I have.

I'm looking at them right now, the price is about what I want to spend....

I mean... at minimum this swap gets you L92 heads... but then you also get VVT so you make most of your torque almost immediately. Really, this is *THE* motor to have at this price point, next to the L92 of course.
