Are all the 98+ BCM's the same?

When replacing the Bcm,does one have to get the same year Bcm as the vehicle you have?

The 98s are a one-year-only design. The wiring harness changed after that year, so yes you have to get the matching PCM.

You can get an A4 or an M6 tranny PCM and have it reflashed or reprogrammed with LS1-EDIT software to convert it if required for your tranny setup.

You have to get a matching pcm but not bcm. I am using a 98 v6 bcm with my swapped 01 ls1 engine. I am using all 01 wiring(console and engine harness) and pcm with the 98 bcm.

When swapping bcm's they must match your key. If not vats will kick in keeping your starter from turning and injectors from pumping; your key less entry will not work also. After replacing the bcm hold down the lock and unlock button on your remote entry to reset your remotes.

bcm's have 2 part numbers for 98+

Keyless entry, and no keyless entry.

a new one is unlocked, so no key code, first power up, it locks to the key in the ignition.

Can the VATs function be disabled with LS1 edit? Is the VATs the reason for needing a BCM in a conversion? or are there other functions that are needed?

Thanks!

With LS1 Edit you can delete or disable the Vats causing you to no longer need the BCM.

Thanks for clarifying that. One less thing I need to worry about.

If you want the a 98 gauge cluster to work properly and show mileage then one would need a 98 BCM?

I am using a 98 bcm with a 2001 cluster. Everything works right, except the fuel level which doesnt work at all. I dont think it has anything to do with the bcm.

the 98 fuel level is controled from the tank, where the 99 is from the computer i belive. There is a post about this, where i am asking what it takes to put a 99 computer into a 98 car.

Ryan.
