Power steering pump fried--need the help of the pros Hopefully you guys running the 5" power steering pulley with an older gearbox can chime in with some direction. I'm running the p series pump with the smaller pulley to clear my stock 68 chevelle gearbox. Motor is 08 LY6 6.0. Pump is brand new purchased from GM stealer, but has developed a seaping leak behind pulley guessing its the pump seal. Is it possible its a bad pump or is there a possible pressure imcompatablity issue between the pump and old box. I know the orig chevelle pump put out like 900 psi and these truck pumps can run upwards 1500psi, but does running the smaller pulley spin the pump fast enough to cause premature wear/heat? Sorry for excessive ??? but unsure how to rectify my issue?
pump seal leaks are common on these. Get yourself a seal from the dealer. Loan the puller from Autozone etc. Pull the pulley off, jamb a straight pick into the seal and pry it out. I would try one seal first then worry about lowering the pressure if it happens again by using a different valve inside or pressure reducing adaptor.
