What do I need to do to start the engine while it's out of the car?

I bought an engine for my conversion and I was wondering how do j go by starting on the engine stand? The engine is out of a 02 SS and it came with all the wiring + computer. I believe the VATS has to be disabled but what else do I need to do?

Supply Fuel, make sure harness has constant power/switch power/ground and wire up starter. Might be prudent to secure the engine somehow. If you want to run it for a while, a coolant system would be advisable.

What do you mean by "all the wiring"? Did it come with just the engine harness? Or did it come with the rest of the engine bay harness with fuse blocks and all.

If it came with just the engine harness, then you'll need to reference some wiring diagrams and give power and grounds where needed.

If it came with the fuse boxes, you are in pretty good shape, as all you have to do is plug things in, and give power to two spots and it'll run.

Otherwise..it needs the basics for every motor to run. A place to secure it to, fuel, and electrical connections. As stated...only run it a short bit if you dont hook up coolant. And make sure it has oil if it was a pull out and shipped to you or something!!!!!

Thanks guys for the info. It came with just the engine, tranny and batt wires. Plus all the ground wires.

You need to do the same exact thing you would do to get it started in the car. If you don't plan on running long, and radiator and coolant isn't necessarily.

Like everyone said, 12v source, fuel and your running. If you've never modified a harness for a swap here there are some guides. One by rodder, that may have been taken down since i can't find it.

I have a copy saved if you want it, i just realized its for a 99. I used it and got my last engine running but now im going to go through the pinouts for my harness before i bring my new engine to get broken in at the shop.

Sorry, but this brings visions of an engine attached to a stand laying on it's side in the driveway with open exhaust flopping around like a dead fish! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Nothing wrong with the engine I just wanted to make sure she runs. I've seen this guys on YouTube turn them while their out of the car. This would be my first conversion and what not so yes I have many questions.

Read this thread to get a few ideas. This is on an LY6 which has a newer ECM, but similar steps would be involved in reflashing our ECM if you plan to do that yourself.

Come on man! You know dead fish don't flop around, they just lay there and stink!:D:judge:
