Default new guy, new swap lq9 into 89 firebird

hello all, I am new here and new to ls motors. I just got a FREE lq9 out of an escalade from my work, it was a COMPLETE drop out less the tranny. What I plan on doing is getting ls1 intake and fuel rails, etc, and converting to cable driven opposed to dbw. I want to retain my 700r4, since I have a nasty rebuild on it just recently. MY question is can I use the ls1 computer iwth my lq9 harness?

Free lq9? Damn I'm jealous. I'm not sure about different years but I know the older 6.0s had the same pcm connectors.

I believe its out of an 04 or 05 escalade. yeah funny story, I work at a body shop and my boss came across allen iversons escalade that he wreceked. He got in trouble with dui or someting and didnt report it. my boss got the truck dirt cheap and picked up a parts one. we fixed allens, and i convinced my boss to pull the motor out of his parts car and put it in his 55 bel air since he did an ls1 in his 69 camaro. so we pulled EVERYTHING out of that escalade and tagged and bagged it. it sat around for a while and he decided to not put it in his bel air and someone offered him money for it but the guy never came back. So I told him iwanted to buy it and he said it has 140k on motor and didnt want to sell it to me, instead gave it to me!

So back to topic, so there maybe a possiblity I can retain the lq9 computer? if so will I just have to relash the lq9 computer to accomidate the ls1 intake and tb??

Your best bet is to use all the parts from the LQ9. I used a 700r4 and put in a manual valve body to get rid of the tv cable.

by putting a changing to a a manual valve body wont that mean I would have to manual shift? or it will just shift on its own w.o the detent cable?

You will have to shift manually. I enjoyed it, was like driving a stick without the hassle of the clutch pedal.

thanks man. I just bought the conversion oil pan and ls1 intake and tb. just need fuel rail and injectors now. I think im going to use the truck style ac compressor and just do the notch on my cross member. I will use the alternator relocation bracket to put the alt. to the side. I also just purchased the 700r4 to ls1 detent cable and appropriate bracketry from bowtie overdrive I think it was. when all that comes in I am going to strip down the motor and start laying out the wiring. First things first, I gotta finish up my 79 camaro this week. I need to replace brake booster before I jump full bore on the fireibird. So in the mean time I have just been researching and aquiring loads of parts.

How much performance do you think yhre is to be had from the LS1 intake swap? I was lead to beleive it wasn't worth it for anything but looks and clearance?

I got an LS1 intake cheap, and it does look better than the truck intake!

I may have missed something but I am assuming you have an LS1 PCM already and want to use it with the LQ9 DBW harness converted to DBC? If you are using an LS1 computer with the LQ9 DBW harness, you will have to convert the harness to drive by cable by rerouting IAC and TPS, moving the O2 grounds (LQ9 used PWM heaters LS1 ran them straight to a ground lug), change the green PCM connector retainers to red, change injector connectors (if using LS intake) and relocate MAP. Hope that helps.

that is exactly what I have been searching for!!! Thank you for the input! Can you elaborate on that please? I am still searching for the ls1 pcm. so I need to get the new ends for my harness that connect to my pcm? I was waiting to get the intake and etc, to set in place to see exactly what wires and sensors i needed to move

I use the truck DBW harness and throttle body on the LS1 intake. Used Ls1 water pump and swapped the pulley to a truck pulley. There is a Vent passage issue but I blocked of the passage to prevent vac leak and made a catch can for thr valve cover vent. Works awsome and looks pretty good too.

well that was one option to make everything easier, to use the dbw tb on the ls1 intake. but I am trying to use the 700r4 since I got it built not to long ago. If I find a 4l60 orsomething soon and cheap may consider. but that why I am using the ls1 tb. I bought the detent setup from bowtie overdrive. My intake should be here any day now as well as the oil pan. This weekend I am going to start taking it apart and cleaning and bolting up new parts. Then I will start the headache of wiring.

Wiring doesnt have to be a headache.

To elaborate you will have to get new retainers (plastic ends on the face of the PCM connectors) since they are keyed differently for a blue/green vs. red/blue pcm.

hey thanks psiconversion! I understand changing the connectors over. I need to print out my pin outs for the existing harness and the ls1 harness for the pcm. Now I need to get my hands on the ls1 computer as well as the harness ends. Where Can I find the harness ends w.o buying a whole harness?
