Manual Swap SUBURBAN
2002 GMC Suburban 2500 6.0 4WD – NV4500 Manual Swap Thread (Not a Yukon XL!)
Hey LS1Tech,I’ve been working on swapping an NV4500 5-speed manual into my 2002 GMC Suburban 2500 6.0 4WD, and I figured I’d document the process here. There’s not much info on manual swaps for these GMT800 Suburbans, so hopefully, this helps anyone considering it.
Background:
- This isn’t a Yukon XL—in the Middle East, the Suburban name was used until 2007 before switching to Yukon XL.
- It’s a 2500 series, factory-equipped with a 6.0L Vortec (LQ4) and a 4L80E.
- After replacing the fluid in the 4L80E, I noticed slipping when hot, likely due to the previous owner never changing the fluid. Instead of rebuilding, I decided to go manual.
The NV4500 Swap:
I sourced an NV4500 5-speed manual locally from a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It’s a solid trans, fully synchronized, and torque-rated for heavy-duty use.Parts Used:
✅ KB Diesel Steel Clutch Pedal – Retains a factory-style pedal feel with a stronger, more durable build.✅ Tick Performance Master Cylinder – Their newly released 99-06 GMT800 master, designed for better engagement and clutch feel.
✅ OEM NV4500 Bellhousing & Shift Tower – Sourced from the same donor truck.
Video Documentation:
I’ve started a YouTube playlist documenting the swap, with more videos coming soon. Check it out here:📺 [YouTube Playlist Link]
Initial Impressions:
- The shifter feel is great—shorter throws than expected, solid engagement.
- Clutch pedal feel is smooth, thanks to the Tick master cylinder.
- No more worrying about 4L80E heat issues or slip—this thing shifts crisp.
Would love to hear from anyone else who’s done a manual swap on a GMT800 truck or SUV!

What is your first gear ?
Do you normally start in second gear ?
I guess you would have had to cut off part of the OEM Brake pedal ?
What is the driveshaft length difference ?
