carbed ls1's

doing a swap and cant decide to go with the fuel injection or a carb setup. Anyone have any expierience with this setup? The car is 98% drag car so gas mileage is no a concern.

I am going to try the carb route just to see how it is. I will use a wide band to try to dial it in. From the published dyno pulls with the carb intake, I realize that a cam swap may be necessary to get the most out of the combo. I will let you know in about a week.

stage 20(TJ) has his 6.0 carbed and it's incredible how nice it runs. He used a wideband on his too I think and gets decent MPG for a ride that is as fast as his runs. I'd give him a shout.

yea please keep me posted on how it turns out. Its going in my drag car so im gonna either go with the ms4 or the Trex.

I ran the 6010 msd box and gm intake with a 850 carb on my 402 and was very happy except for the problems i had with the ignition. best pass to date was a 6.19 @ 116. Changing the ignition for next year to the 7al box a crank trigger and msd's cam sensor.

What kind of problems with the ignition? Box go bad? Also are you using a LS1 style convertor in your 700r4 or a hughes adapter and older style?

From what I have seen for a mostly dragrace application, a carbed LS1 will make more power and get down the track quicker. I am sure MPG will suffer some from a carb over efi, but as you said that is not a concern.

I am in the process of putting a heads/cam 346ci carbed LS1 in my 2nd gen 1970 Firebird. I look forward to seeing what the results are!

i run the edeljunk box, and a friend switched to the msd for the 2 step, he has been a 6.28 with it and no problems.

what sort of problems were you having out of the igniton?

udlose99ta Oct 20, 2006 03:39 AM

On edelbrocks website it says that msd makes the ignition box for them in this setup... Where can i find the msd ignition for this setup? Is it just a direct replacement of the old one or how does it work?

bygblok Oct 20, 2006 07:02 AM

the advantage using the newer MSD box is that you can laptop your ignition curve and like TJ said, it has a two step in it as well. The older MSD/Edelbrock has chip you plug in to the side that set the curves for you. It's just not quite as easy to do a custom curve on. Hey TJ, that old "edeljunk" sure seems to make your car run well. You wanna borrow my TH350 until you get yours back together?? You're welcome to anything I have here at the house........

preciate it, but ill pass at the moment.

get a hood on the vette to hide the motor and go out a kill some GT's with it for sure. That'd piss off a few of 'em wouldn't it? I like the vette with late model power.

Cop Car Oct 25, 2006 03:05 PM

use a carbed intake, but drill it for injectors, you have the best of both worlds

I actually considered that but with the LS you have to deal with different software to fire injectors AND the clils so I steered clear of it. It would be cool to toss a huge throttle body on it with some port injection though....hmmmm, might be time for some more research!!

Cop Car Oct 25, 2006 09:15 PM

just run a stock wiring harness and computer with it

89lx-ls1 Oct 26, 2006 05:56 PM

Well i actually had a th350 in my car last year. I ended up changing my setup when i was putting the car together. i couldnt find a 700 that would stand up to the hp and tq. that i was producing. I just had problems with starting the car when i got it all together. Never found the problem but it just decided to start one day after i got back from out of town.

holley505 Oct 27, 2006 06:34 AM

I have broke many 700r4 in my past.... :eyes:
