I did however go to first ever drag racing event open to all cars and was lotta fun at Calverton executive air park. If you are on Facebook look up Long Island car shows and events , strong Island camaro .
Lotta good cars and people in these groups.
I also got car painted this year and will be probably only 4th gen at Morgan park show in July - August time. That is the best show by water on north coast I always go to.

I'm a Suffolk resident as well. I'm not in touch with too much of the scene but I do know on Tuesdays Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church in Patchogue has a fair sized cruise night. On Thursdays the Bellmore train station parking lot in Nassau gets pretty crowded. Then there's the Oak Beach parking lot on the ocean in Babylon on Sunday mornings if you like to get up really early. There are many car clubs on the island that have shows. Long Island Cars has a car show coming up this Sunday May 7th at the Bald Hill Amphitheater parking lot 8am to 4pm. It's usually a big show but should be huge because this will be the first nice weather show this year. It will be the first I'm attending because I don't like to bring my car out on dank misty days which is what the weather has been the first few shows.

They're both too far away to be practical. Eastern Suffolk to Bellmore on a weekday afternoon is a butt puckering torture ride in my WS6 convertible. The moron per mile factor on LI is staggering so it's something to be avoided. I use to go to OBI a lot when I had my G8 GT a decade ago but I have no desire to be on my way by 6am on a Sunday anymore.

I agree with you 1000%. Try doing it from New York City, it's even worse. Most of the times I drive over the bridge to Queens and my friend takes his 69 Chevelle or 69 GTO.

I grew up in Canarsie, Brooklyn a very dangerous place now but it was only starting to change when we moved out 35 years ago. I use to do all that crazy driving all over stuff when I was younger. I did anything to get out of Brooklyn for a while. I mean the closest place we had to track race was Raceway Park in NJ after they closed down West Hampton. Once I was in my mid 40s that all lost a lot of its appeal so I gave up traveling and serious racing up for good. Made building up a bank account much easier too.

I know how much income household has to generate to live on Long Island. I grew up in Huntington and Hauppauge. The family business drew me back to the Bronx once I graduated high school. That was a really long time ago lol. I have a deal I can't refuse on an apartment plus my wife does not drive so suburbia is out. Land has become too valuable so tracks are disappearing. Also, people move next to a racetrack and then start to complain.

That's what closed West Hampton. Yuppies with money and political clout just simply erasing what they don't like from the landscape that predates them by 40 years. It's been since the 80's that LI hasn't had a legitimate drag track. Now they're racing on the Calverton Navy airfield runways. How long before that gets shut down buy whatever condos go up within earshot.
