Default How many have their original Monsoon stereo units????

As our convertibles age and go through normal attrition, and therefore become seen less frequently, I was wondering how many survivors still have the original Monsoon units. I was glancing though the 'sticky' above and really never thought about how many 4th generation F-bodies might remain that kept everything intact. I know rims/wheels were often replaced but the stereo is even another thing that owners replaced. You wonder how many actual stock 'verts remain out there. I'm one and just curious about others. I realize there aren't many owners posting here anymore but for those few, who has the Monsoon??

In '98, the 'verts did not get a "Monsoon" system, but I still have my original HU and speakers, supplemented by my custom subwoofer. Interestingly, I hardly ever use my stereo system, preferring to listen to the LS1 music w/ the top down. I have noticed though that the volume **** on the HU sometimes malfunctions and only increases the volume regardless of which way it is turned. Good thing I can use the steering wheel buttons to bring it back down. The CD changer still works fine too. Just a few days ago I was playing it and it sounds like my front door speakers are cracking up (dried-out cones / surround / whatever), so I'll be shopping for replacements in the not-too-distant future.

I didn’t think that the 98’s got the Monsoon... I’m getting older and can’t remember... Thank you to Johnny B for helping me with that.

My 98 SS is all original as far as the sound system goes... tape deck with the cd changer in the trunk. It’s actually all original everywhere except for the wheels and cat back the previous owner installed. Same today as it was when the Fbodfather himself drove it new.

Just had it out getting washed and was listening to the Cubs lose today on AM 670. Now she’s tucked back in the garage waiting for another ice cream run.

I should clarify, the '98 Firebird convertibles did not get the Monsoon, which came in two flavors: W54 w/ the cassette in the HU, and W55 w/ the CD in the HU. Zero '98 Firebird 'verts were built w/ W54 or W55 sound systems, 'verts received either the W59 (w/ cassette HU) or W73 (w/ CD HU) sound systems, which were not "Monsoon". Mine has W59 + the CD changer (U1S)

In the Camaros, the Monsoon also came in two flavors: UL0 w/ the cassette in the HU, and UN0 w/ the CD in the HU. 1130 '98 V8 Camaro convertibles (which includes both Z28 and SSs) received UL0, and 1282 got the UN0. The standard non-Monsoon sound system in '98 Camaro 'verts was either UM6 (w/ cassette HU) or UW3 (also w/ cassette HU). I'm not sure what the difference is between UM6 and UW3 HUs, but only 67 V8 Camaro 'verts came equipped w/ UM6 and only 1 w/ UW3.

Sorry for the confusion.

I prefer OEM but the previous owner changed the entire stereo...in this case the aftermarket is very nice so I am not too disappointed. But I wish I had it in a box.

i did find a set up 17” five spokes, WS6 Wheels that 18 and 19 in Wheels when the tires wear out...soon.

I still have the original Monsoon in my 2000, but the CD changer has died. I can't even get it to eject the magazine so I can get the CDs out. It has power and tries to eject, but is hung up somehow. I've been tempted to upgrade, but I want to keep the OEM look.

The capacitors in those systems are far past the expiration date,, LOL I suspect many would sound way better with a delicate hand going through them and replacing all the electrolytics in them..

No radio. Will be working on a custom iPad mini install.
Pair it with a nice Bluetooth speaker since it’s a summer weekend driver only at this point. Stock stereo went out and out of car few years ago.

you guys are lucky , my stock stereo never sounded that great and kept blowing the passenger door speaker so after 2 or 3 replacement speakers i said blank it and put in a new kenwood head unit with alpine mini amp & alpine R speakers. the installer had trouble so after bypassing the trunk amp & rewired to match kenwood to alpine parts $400 & labor $400 (including dynamat behind all 4 speakers) my stereo sounds great going on 10 years & no complaints
