Looking to get into the vette market!
Hey guys, I've been a member on the forums for quite a while now with my 1998 T/A. I've been through a ton of mods with it and it will be paid off here next month. I am making enough money now at this stage in my life where I can finally afford the car I've always wanted... a Z06.
I would like to get into one next spring and spend the winter looking for the perfect one! From what I understand 03-04's are the ones that I should be looking into. Would love to get a C6 but really don't think I'll be able to afford something quite that nice. I would like to go all out and be as picky as I want with this one. I am new to the vettes though and was wondering from some of you guys who have been around them for a while what I should be wary of when looking to purchase. Whatever advice you guys can offer I'll greatly appreciate it!

Well I would say anywhere from an 02-04 would be fine. Since you have been around car's you pretty much already know what to look for when buying. Most Vette's tend to get EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) error, which will cause you to lose your ABS (you can still drive the car safely) But it's just a PITA. Its an easy fix, you can get them rebuilt pretty cheap ($150) so just a head's up. They also have the steering column lock, but there is also a cheap fix for that. Anyway, just shop around, corvetteforum.com has some nice one's on there right now. I would say look around and dont buy the first you see, and dont be afraid to make lower offers than people are asking, as we all know the market suck's right now. Good luck.

Lol yeah they are getting alot cheaper. A C5Z stock vs stock is a bit quicker than a LS2 C6, but being the C6 is newer it's a tough choice. If you look around im sure you can get a nice C5Z for $5K or so cheaper than a C6. We all know they can both be fast with mods, but the C6 is more comfortable.

Definitely get a Z06. An awesome driver can put that thing in the 11.9999 range stock to give you an idea. You can pick one up for around $25-29K so not bad for what you're getting.

You definitely can go wrong with any of those choices. Get full bolt-ons first(cold air intake aka vararam(I love mine), ported throttle boday, underdrive pulley, headers/X-pipe/cat-back exhaust. That should put you in the mid 11s easy at the track and be a hell of alot of fun to drive. And H/C and you'd be in the 10s depending on traction and how you drive. And nitrous or forced induction and look out lol. Do alot of research before you buy. It helps out alot.

I was in the same situation 10 months ago when I bought my C5Z. At the time I could find C6's with around 30-35K miles for about $30K. The C5Z I got with 27K miles for a little under $27K. I think it would be nice to have the newest body style but there's also something to be said for having the best performing model of the car (Z06). I never drove a C6 but the Z just has the raw racier feel that I was looking for coming from a 427RWHP T/A that was pretty raw. If you're going to do H/C/etc. on either car then I would probably base my decision on looks alone as they're both going to perform about the same with those mods. I will say that if you're looking for a stick then get the C5Z or a Z51 C6 so you can get the MN12...I love it over the M6 tranny. In fact the LS2 would probably have the edge after modding with the few extra cubes. Either way you can't go wrong.

Get whatever body style you like and anything 02 and up will be fine on that. I say get whatever you like because we all know the mod bug will hit and it doesn't matter what platform it is.

I've got an '01 Zo6 and it's just as fast/faster as any of the 50 or so '02+ Z's I've driven. Get the cleanest one, don't pass on a nice '01 if it calls to you. If you're changing the cam/headers anyway then you've just changed the things that got slightly better on the '02+
I'd personally get a Zo6 all over again if I lost this one.... C6's are nice, but... I'm a Z-o-phile
