Default '01 Z06 question...

Figured I'd ask as I am in the market for a z06.
I recall that some of the earlier ls1/ls6 engines may have had problems with pistons/rings or something like that.
I vaguely remember there were recalls some years ago.
Is this correct, and if so, which models/years should I watch out for, and what might the symptoms look/sound like??

Thanks in advance for the help.

Brian

The sticky above states late 2000 and 2001 models may have that problem.

There was no 2000 Z06.... Mine does not burn any oil between the 5000 mile oil changes, but I have heard of issues with all Ls1/Ls6 based engines my 99 Z28 burned about 2 quarts every 5000 miles....

That's what I was wondering.
I had heard they used oil, or something to that effect.
Hearing that you have not had that problem is reassuring, but 2 qts every 5000 on your '99 Z28 is unreasonable, for sure.
I'll probably be picking up an '02 Z06, since the prices are very comparable, and there's the extra 20hp, unless I find a great deal on a low mileage '01.

Thanks for the reply.

The 2001 Z06 had some oil consumption issues. It was also the 385 HP version & without the headup display...the other years were 405 HP plus other improvments in the car over the 2001 edition. The first thing that they did was change the PVC system and if that didn't work then they would rering the engine. They used a new oil ring and a second ring but kept the same top ring on the piston. If you are in the market for a used Z06 go to a 2002 or newer model.
