280 MPH corvette

I had a guy tell me today an out of the box new vette comming out in the next few years would be able to do 280 mph. I called him an idiot and has no idea what he's talking about. my question, Is it physically possable for a street car to do 280 mph?? I guess if it made 2000 hp and weighed like 2000 lbs and had the drag of a razor blade MAYBE but certenly not a stock car.

skunkdya 08-05-2006 06:55 PM

You are correct about "if it had 2000 hp and good aerodynamics" but weight has no bearing on top speed. Lots of super high mph salt flat cars weigh well over 4500lbs. They actually want to weigh more so they can stay glued to the ground. If you have wings and stuff, that will keep you glued to, but the more downforce, the more drag. If your car just weighs more, there is no more aerodynamic drag.

And yes, the guy is an idiot.

HeapaShifter 08-05-2006 07:08 PM

The guys an idoit. No stock vette will EVER go 280 mph. That's just way too fast.

The fastest production car that I know of is the Bugatti Veyron which can go 252 mph. It's got about 1000 hp and cost about $1 million.

If GM produces a $1 million vette (won't happen) it might go near 280 mph. :judge:

LTSpeed 08-05-2006 07:27 PM

The Sledgehammer 'vette went 254mph on a 7-mile oval. Street Car--NOT!!

Louie83 08-05-2006 08:36 PM

The thing is, every single mph is much harder to attain than the previous one. It took supercar companies a long time to top the McLaren F1 in terms of top speed, until Bugatti finally smashed it with 252 as HeapaShifter said.

That out of the box Vette with all of the hype surrounding it will be fast, but it won't break any top speed records. Quarter-mile records....we'll have to see.

The Konigsegg CC, CCR, and CCX are all faster as well. There's two other cars I believe that are faster than the F1... it's not really all that quick anymore :jest: in terms of being the only one in "super speed" category.

Damn that would be sweet.. those british fucks would be pist if the vette smashed everything again hahaha!

The fastest production car in the world is the Bugatti Veyon with a price tag set at 1.3 million and a top speed of 252 MPH. The fastest "limited" production car is the hennessey Viper, of which 48 are being built and has a top speed of 255 MPH. Both cars have 1000 horse. O.K. the Bugatti has one more horse power... :eyes:

A 280 mile per hour factory stock Corvette? Is this guy on the metric system? Before we presume that this guy is completely clueless, we should afford him of the possibility that he hasn't mistaken his information as kilometers.

The Hennessey Viper is not going to come close to 255mph. They have never tested it to my knowledge and all this "clamed" top speed is silly. And no, a stock corvette will not see 280. Tell your buddy to stop drinking. :engarde:

The way things are going we'll be lucky if in 2035 someone isnt rolling around in a beat up C6 ZO6 searching for the Juice ala Mad Max.

2002_Z28_Six_Speed 08-06-2006 12:00 AM

It will go that fast with rocket power....

And what gives you this impression ??

The guy with "the news" might just be talking about the Blue Devil. It is slated as production coupe, with a better DC than the the Sledgehammer, its 775 pounds lighter and makes more power..... with a supercharged LS9.

Mile an hour is more related to DC than horsepower. Hell, there were cars in the late 60's did more than 250, with half the tire, less aero and suspension designs of 40 years ago. Albeit being a race car, it was possible then.... and its more than possible now.

A new 2006 Z06, out of the box runs 193-195mph...... I guess 175mph was driver related ??

According to Chevy it runs 198mph, if you take their word for it.

There is a car company currently claiming 270.

(not to be confused with brabus)

Hmm that little Barabus is pretty cool. With 1005bhp, looks very saleenish.

Top speeds as tested by Road and track..

C6 ZO6.......197mph
Ford GT......204mph
Viper..........194mph
Ferrari F430.195mph
911 turbo....193mph

Next year Chevy is coming out with a special edition ZO6 thats supercharged. It should have a top speed around 210mph or so..280mph is just crazy for a street car. No way Chevy would ever build it... :jest:
