Default New 1/4 mile time...04 Z06. Wheel/tire recommendations?

Finally got to run the Z06 for the first time this weekend. All in all I was pretty happy considering the track, prairiehilldragway.com, it was....not that great to put it simply I cant wait to get back with some tires. The car is an 04 Z06 with 5000 miles, a vararam and an mgw shifter on stock tires. This is my fastest time down the strip, i had a 350z and ran a 13.00 once so Im finally in the 12s

60ft: 2.128
1/8th mile mph: 88.37
1/8th mile et: 8.356
1/4 mile mph: 114.56
1/4 mile et: 12.712

Now, I dont want to run on my street tires again. What wheel/tire combo has worked the best for the vettes? Looking for slicks or et streets, just dont know the size or backspacing needed. Since Im on stock suspension/clutch would a 15" tire be best to help take the hit over a 17"? What suspension/drivetrain mods should I do to reduce the chance of breaking? Running a 2.1 60ft sucks....

I have Nitto Drag Radials 305/35/18 and they seem to do ok on the track. I havent got them really heated up as I dont want them to stick to much and break my rear end. But I would say to get a DTE brace and hardened output shafts. I have the brace on mine and it seems to not wheel hop as bad. BTW nice passes you can get some low 12's out of these cars on stock tires just takes some practice.

the good news is your suspension can remain stock for a while but, if you plan on drag racing much you should seriously consider investing in a drag pack with some 26x16x11.5 MT ET Street bias ply tires in the rear and 16x3.5" bias plys up front to match. you don't want to mix radial & bias plys together so don't skimp on the fronts.

IMO its the best mod you can do, besides the driver mod, because it not only greatly reduces the chance for driveline failure/breakage due mostly to the large, soft, shock absorbing ET Street sidewalls but, it also improves your ET's.

you can get them used for under $2k if you look around. new they are around $2400 or so but, they hold their value well if you ever decide to sell it and they go like hot cakes. Only problem is with the added traction of the ET Streets your clutch will become the next weak link in the chain...

Thanks guys...ya I dont want to run anything but a bias ply tire. I had BFG Dr on my nissan and it just hopped everywhere. I want something that will wrinkle and stick.

Can I get some used waggon wheels/another used wheel (other than the ccw drag pack) and throw some plys on there...which should I go with/which is the lightest? What about welds or another drag type wheel. Unless the CCW drag pack is the way to go then Ill keep my eyes peeled.

My friend has nitto's on his high 12 second Z and they hook to an extent but he can never get a perfect run with them in his stalled auto. He has tried a small burnout and roasting them off for 20 seconds, either way they just are not soft enough to hook on even his car. They are the perfect tire for street/strip on mostly stock cars because they have the longest tread life over any other radials due to them not being quite as soft. But if it were for strickly track use then look no further than Mickey Thompson drag radials for your drag wheels whichever size you may choose. They also do not require a long burnout especially with these semi-stock cars due to them being so soft. Good Luck!!!

The CCW fronts for C5s are normally 16x4.5" or even 16x5" in some cases I believe.
On the C6s we use the 17x4.5". :yesnod:

I pretty sure my front ccw's are 5 inches wide. Setup has been working fine for me so far.

A drag pack is great but if you don't plan on mods or only plan on bolt ons then a drag pack is overkill IMO. I even think a mt et street radial is overkill for a stock zo6. You will wear out your clutch quickly and have to air them up to 24ish psi to allow for the tires to spin(launching @ 5000+).

A nitto drag radial IMO is propbably the best drag radial for a bone stock c5/c5z. It's good for low 1.5x's. People who say nittos don't hook aren't using them correctly. I've cut 1.6x's on my nitto street tires. It's all about proper technique and some trial and error.

You should stick with a 17" rim tire combo or even 18".
15" will never fit, 16" requires modification.

Pick the tire according to your car and it's setup. (Not what hooks the best).
Don't overtire the car.
We had to have my buddy launch @ 6200rpms to get his bolt on 03Z to not bog with 17" etstreets at 20+psi on a cold day where he was making tons of power. He also had a clutch.
That's my input from experience with all tires.
Also, I never experienced wheelhop while running a drag radial ever from bolt-on-cam only-heads/cam.(on stock suspension).
Often the tires aren't hot enough if you get wheelhop.

I run 315/35/17 BFG drag radials on a 17x10.5" wheel and have cut a best of 1.779
