Default First time at track with 02 camaro, kind of impressed

Hey guys,

I took the car out to the track for the first time last weekend. Was actually quite impressed with it. I'll give you a little back ground on it and let me know what you guys think.

2002 camaro z28 auto 144,xxx miles stock motor and trans
Paid 1500 for it
Found a new set of tsp long tubes on craigs list for 200
Came with tube rear control arms and panhard bar.
z06 wheels.
I got rid of ac stuff, threw the headers on built a 3" exhaust x pipe to summit mufflers.
Other than that bone stock, stock stall
Have low voltage problems.
Cam code p0343 (low cam signal voltage) Figured i'd run it any ways.

Threw the car on the trailer took it out and ran 12.79 with 1.9 60'. 107 mph(ill look at slip when i get home)

Full interior with me in it weighed in at 3585.

What do you guys think? Decent times?

I was surprised, first time with a v8 at the track, my boosted civic still was faster , but was impressed for the money I spent on the car.

That was at Martin for test and tune, going to put the car on a diet and bring the weight down, might take the two chambered mufflers off and see if I can put up any mph.

Thats what I was thinking, also I found out one of the rear wheel bearings were wore out and all the slide pins on front brakes were seized. Fixed all that last weekend. Car looks like hell but figured it would be a fun car to beat the hell out of.

As far as tuner, the car came with Diablo trinty, guy bought it never used it, On stock tune up it ran 12.83 and with the diablo tune loaded it ran 12.79. Picked up 1mph. i havent played with it much, might try messing with the tune settings before running the car this week.

Checked the slip.

60' - 1.98
1/8 et - 8.26
1/8 mph - 87.19
1/4 et - 12.79
1/4 mph - 108.28

Cut a little weight out and going to shoot back over to martin on friday for test and tune if the weather holds. I need to get some lighter wheels. these 17/18s are big and heavy

^^^ Yes!!! Sometimes even just a tad lower.

I did just notice playing with the switches on the car to draw power that when I use the turn signals the voltage moves up and down with the turn signal.

Ok guys,

took the car back out last week and ran it, it was very humid and hot, best I could get out of the car was a 12.9 this time. Having traction issues. I picked up over the weekend some subframe connectors and going to order some summit 3 way adjustable shocks, now my question is what is the next upgrade? I am kind of doing it as a budget build as i bought the connectors for 60 and the shocks are only 38ish a piece.

Cam kit?
Stall?
Intake?

What order should I get them?

Also seeing as the car has 144k on it, if i open it up i will want to replace oil pump and lifters.

My two cents:

1) drag radials
2) free weight reduction
3) converter/cooler/tune
4) cam
5) intake

your car is running good, I would guess mine is running similar sense I havent had a problem hanging with my buddys 11.50 car and im also running lts and a xpipe with 17/18 also my next mod is a converter ordered it from yank today, from the gains people have gotten from converters you should crack into the 11's with a stall and sticky tire

Thank you for the input guys. Just got some brake stuff ordered (front calipers are bad). New negative ground cable, since mine is corroded. Also ordered sjm line lock since I will have to bleed the brake from caliper job.

Going to look at a set of wheels/tires this weekend. My buddy's dad runs a transmission shop in the area, seeing what price he can get me on a 4000 stall.
Will install subframe connectors this weekend as well.

Hard to imagine someone selling a strong running ls1 car for $1500... did the prior owner happen to be a meth head?

Interested in seeing pics of this thing.

^^ Never said it was the prettiest car,

Little back story, the car is 02 z28 35th year car, originally red, but previous owner spray painted it black!
Did not have the right hood on it, some terrible aftermarket tails. Had a check engine code, exhaust burned into bumper.

Ton of things that made the car not very appealing. But being semi mechanically inclined I was not afraid of a little work since it was cheap. The day I bought it, drove 70 miles home no issue, slowly have been working on getting it to look half way decent but would much rather have a faster car.

I am just getting my feet wet with v8 american cars, so I didnt want to dive in with a huge investment.
