Default new best...then up in flames

Well, my car burned up pretty bad today at the Year One event. Not really sure what happened, I'm thinking it was a nitrous backfire but I'm not sure yet. When I let off at the big end the car popped and started hesitating. I got the car stopped and it puffed a ton of smoke then burst into flames. I had to watch it burn while the fire truck did nothing. The guy that raced me had time to call his girlfriend and tell her to tell them it was on fire, then the tower had to announce it over the PA just so the fire crew knew to go down there! I'm done with Commerce, I'll drive two hours to another track before I go through all that again. It wouldn't have been nearly that bad if they had been paying attention. In the end I would say everything from the firewall up is gone, total loss. Even the underside of the dash was melting away and dripping burning plastic from the inside. Sucks.

Sorry to hear that, I saw the post in another thread about this.
I've seen it to many times here to not invest the money into a halon system for my car.
I'm sure yours is a street car still, so it's not as easy to think about.
Just sucks to hindsight it regardless.

I'm okay, all the damage was to the car. As far as the extinguisher, I have yet to buy one. I know I should have had one, it would have at least helped some. But hindsight is a m'fer I guess. Everyone take this as a lesson to BUY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

Sorry to hear that...gives you a reason to come back with even more HP!

My little bitty fire extinguisher probably would not help much...fits in the Formula's door pocket. I do carry a large one for the trailer.

I assume it was a wet kit? Take care and good luck on the repairs.

Nope, dry kit with just a 150 shot. Same thing I've been running for years. I have a wet kit on the car also, but I wasn't using it and it didn't even have any gas in the fuel cell or anything. Kinda weird. Thanks for the kind words, hopefully it will be better next time around.

I'm curious how it started on fire on a dry shot. I can see how a leaky/bad fuel soleniod
would cause a fire on a wetshot.

I'm sorry about your car, that REALLY sucks!

Pretty sure we figured out what happened. I believe the solenoid hung open after I let out. The car was hesitating and idling around 3000 on it's own as I was slowing down. When I got the car slowed down to turn off the track I tried to give it gas to get all the way off to the side and that's when everything started. I'm thinking the stuck noid filled the intake and as soon as I hit the gas again it ignited and it was over from there.
