Torque converter questions
Like the title says I'm looking to purchase a new trans 4l65e and new converter so I was hoping some of you would share some of your experience. I'm looking at a couple different converters I want something that's going to hit hard on motor but still let me spray something small 150 shot. The Th400 got really old cant go on the highway much and the converter was a nitrous stall and was a little tight so the car never really sixty hard on motor 1.60 looking to run some mid to low 1.4's
Converters I'm considering Yank and Circle D. Let me know if what your running and your suggestions. See signature for what the car currently runs on motor.
Thanks for any input.

I had to go back and look at my data logs, but I was shifting at 6600rpm and it lands right at 5600 rpm. This was in February with good air so in the hotter months I would likely see it land about 5400rpm since the power level will be reduced. Normally you want to see 1000-1500 rpm drop, but unless you are actually data logging, your data will be a guestimate at best. This applies to 4L60Es though.
When you start talking about different transmissions like powerglides, you will want more shift extension because you only have 2 gears to play with. You should expect a lot more SI with a light lower powered car than a heavy higher powerd car.
A 600 rpm SI in a 4L60E would be a real loose race type converter, not a streetable car IMO.
FWIW- Our slower mid-high 11 second Camaro has a 4C and it shifts at 6000 rpm and drops to 4600 rpm. It's quite a bit quicker than I had expected it to be. It's a 4L60E also.

The stall speed really depends on your particular application. The 5C was about a 4700 rpm stall IIRC behind our 408 and we went 1.29 60fts in real good air. It went many 1.31-1.32s in decent air. Our avatar pic was with the 5C in a 4L60E.
We are running a Powerglide now with an 8" Circle D race converter. It feels tight around the pit area and would be fine on the street if we chose to cruise it. You will need to call Chris and give him all your info. He'll take care of you. His number is 713-895-8834.

how do your circle d's compare to your yank pt stalls that you have used (60 ft, mph, etc.)? i just put in a yank pt 3800 2.0 str. i hope i like it. i was looking for a efficient converter that gave good mph. i don't need a neck breaking launch. i can live with 1.7 60 ft times in my street car. i was just curious how they compared...
Both Yank and Circle D make very good converters IMO. After having a variety of both, I chose Circle D as my personal preference for various reasons. I spent a large amount of money with Yank buying converters they recommended for my stroker application and I blew through them. There was no opportunity for a free restall, just an "oops sorry about that". When I found Chris at Circle D, he explained in detail what would be best for my application and why. He showed me his converter internals compared to some competitors units and what he does extra to make a quality torque converter. His converters play a big role in why our cars run how they do. The torque conveter can make you or break you.
The PT3800 is a good converter for a street car. It will be quite a bit tighter than the PT4000-PT4400s, so as long as you aren't running a huge cam, it'll work fine for you. It will like higher rpms and should meet your 60ft goals or get you close.
Just make sure you get the right converter for the right application. G/L.

Taubr Unit,
I would have traded you no problem but I had a sale before I even pulled the trans out of the car. BTW why you wanting to dump the 4l60E is it a reliability issue ? There were things I liked about the 400 but after a while you do miss the overdrive if it's a street car.

no issues, just want to go to a th350/400 for future plans and mine isnt a street car.
My trans is for sale if ure interested and my converter still has 1 free restall so you can make it whatever u need. FLT level4 w/ vacuum mod. and 3200 vig. converter with about 500 miles on it all and no track pass's or power adders through it. PM me if interested
