Default Belt/Harness Question

So I just finished installing a Stroud 5-point harness in my car, roll bar mount, wrap-around style. My OEM seatbelts for the passenger side are long gone. So my question is, legally, can I get away with a standard 2-point lap belt for the passenger, or do I NEED to have a shoulder strap? I RARELY carry passengers in my car, but just in case would a 2-point (like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BOB-50502-4/ I live in NJ.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Link fixed.

Joe, I dont know about Jersey but here in Chicago a shoulder harness/strap is required in the state of Illinois. Lap belts mean nothing anymore for any passenger front or rear.

Yeah, if I know my state, the same law probably applies. I'm hoping someone can verify. Looking at NJs MVC site doesn't turn up any specifics, unfortunately.

A five point harness gets you a no seat belt ticket in IL, VA, and MD. Just carry the 75 bucks with you and pay the officer at the door and save yourself the trip to the courthouse if you live in these states. I learned VA and MD myself many moons ago, my idiot kid (who was warned ahead of time) found out in IL and he has both sets of belts in the car so there is no excuse for him.

Use the stockers on the streets and the 5 points when you are racing. It sucks but that is how the game is played.

I drove for over a year with 6-points with the top down in both PA and NH and never had an issue. They can ticket me all they want but my stock seatbelts are never going back in.

Like we talked about, get an expired matching 5-point set for the passenger.
