Big Cams Better ET's?

I've seen alot of BIG HP, BIG CAM threads around here for quite some time. I want to know if these setups run the number. Some of us have been running 10's with the stock shortblock with a 224 cam and after what seems to be a lot of progress according to the dyno, you would think more would be running the numbers.

Does the little ol' 224 still rule the track or do the big bad cams lay down the numbers?

CamaroCain Feb 5, 2004 06:41 PM

The big cam game hasn't been around all that long really. Some people's tracks dont open up for a while and some just need to get their lazy butts to a track to find out. There have been a few: Mike H, 01-Z, and a few others that have posted go numbers though. Wait for another month and I bet more will be posting results.

My new TSP cam picked up ET and MPH at the track Vs. my B1. I'm going back saturday to see how much more i can pick up with more time on the PCM.

I'm snowed in. I'll tell ya when the track opens.

How much ET and MPH are we talking about? And did you happen to have it dynoed?
What's funny is that 232/228 isn't a big cam today, but a year ago it was outrageous and every question on the board was "is it too much?", "is the powerband too high".

I'm really anxious to see back to back tests with cams such as the B1, T1, C1 etc that were the IDEAL cam to have back in the day. I remember splitting hairs over 112 vs. 114 lobe on the same exact cam and even how an extra 2 degrees of intake/exaust duration was too much for these motors.

I went from a best 11.4 to 11.1 by switching to a FMS F4 cam and the car had near Identical 60"s plus the DA was near the same as well. But then again the F4 is still a small cam compared to most these days.....I just got a F11 this week which is a 228/230 compared to the 226/226 but im not sure yet if I want to change it out or not since the F4 is working so good ......

Dropped .7 sec with a cutout and cam swap from C1 to TSP 231/237

StreetStalkerZ Feb 6, 2004 08:37 AM

I picked up .15/2 mph with mine over the B1 with no miles on the tune and the DA was -900 compared to the B1 best of -1700 DA. I shift at 6500 rpms with 918 comp. valve springs. No dyno runs yet but i should be getting around to getting some in a few weeks but i won't have solid comparisons since i changed a few things.

Interesting. I'm also running a B1, and contemplating trying a bigger CAM.

Here's some fod for thought.

At the TR shootout, all the cars had bigger cams. These times were all with 3400lbs raceweight.

Maggie- X2 cam and ran 11.00 at 122mph
Rich Andrews- 230/230 cam ran 11.06 at 122mph.
Trevor- Big cam along the lines of an X3- 10.98 at 122mph.
Me- 234/242 cam, 11.06 at 123mph
Jrod- X3 cam 11.19 at 122mph.
Fireball- 11.32 at 121mph- 236/232?? I think.

I ran a best of 11.31 at 121 mph(1.56 60') with the B1 cam and now 10.94 at 124.5 (1.48')

HOSS99 Feb 6, 2004 09:47 AM

Smoke ur 5.0,

Thanks, I'm leaning more towards keeping the B1. Whose Heads are you using?

Trq# is very impressive!

Thx,

Smoke_ur_5.0 Feb 6, 2004 09:52 AM

RMS(Raging Motorsports) stage 2 5.7 Ls1 heads. :)

Well yeah, that is true, I ASSumed he meant CAM ONLY times.

the bigger cams that make more power within that high rpm band will go faster as long as you have the rest of the combo to take advantage of it. i know the big cams are going faster but in fairness they have also gone more extreme setups. 4.56 gearing + 28" tires in mn6 cars are norm and 4.10 gearing and 4400 convertors are the key in a4 setups.

no doubt some will still go fast with a smaller cam, but it has been rare for a small cam 224 type to go into the low low 11s high 10s like the big cam COMBOS. ls1edit and the timing/fuel curves seem to have really affected the big cams and got them running great as opposed to a year or so ago when we just threw them in there and hoped to god it would idle and run well.

Jantzer98SS Feb 6, 2004 12:10 PM

Wow great results! I'm thinking the bigger cams require a good tune as well to run well. But it seems to me that with all the extra power, 10's would be cake and even 10.4-10.5's should be easily doable. I realize it gets harder and harder to go a .1 quicker, but it wasn't that long ago high 11's was the benchmark and nobody thought 10's was possible NA stock shortblock.

One other question, how do these bigger cams like nitrous? And have any high 10 sec, low 11 sec heads/cam cars switched out their big loose stall and ran something tighter with nitrous? How much juice will it take to run 9's? I'm trying to talk myself into a nitrous setup this year, but 10.4-10.5's with the stock shortblock sounds like a fun goal as well. :D It could be just a little more weight reduction and a big cam away for me..

The big splits like the TSP 231/237 and the LG G5X2 love the spray.

346 H/C nitrous track times?

Roger White Feb 6, 2004 03:18 PM

The "big" cams in a equal set_up will own a 224 cammed car.

mike c. Feb 6, 2004 04:51 PM

my c1 hammer cam is on its way out. i'm installing the g5x2 cam this spring

interesting thread, hey jantzer, I saw you run that 10.82 at sac raceway :D
