Good Enough for Mid Low 10's??? I've currently came across a LQ9 from a 2002 Cadillac w/ 317 heads. I want to install it in a 86' Buick Regal. I would like to know what would work for a budget N/A setup for Mid 10's to High 9's?? The Regal's current setup is: 406ci SBC 11.0:1 SCR 1 5/8 headers Holley 850CFM 4150 carb Dart Iron Eagle heads PowerGlide w/ 4000stall 9inch w/ 4.56 gears full spool Cage Kirkey seats MSD 2 Step Trans Brake Car Race weight is 3012lbs with 10gals of fuel and no driver. best time is 11.53 @ 114mph w/ 1.35 60' I currently have a spare 04 Silverado PCM with modified harness, spare LS2 Fuel Rail/injectors/ and intake from my 06 GTO maggie swap as well as a couple sets of stock 5.3L heads. Have a full spare set of ARP rod bolts as well. So what are the best options with the stock cube Lq9 N/A?? Port and Mill the stock 317's maybe down to 66cc combustion chambers or look into some aftermarket heads?? Install a Thunder Racing TRex cam/MS4/SNL RedLetter?? I would like to use the 4th gen Fbody LT's. Would it be better to go with the MSD programmable Timing Box and super victor intake?? Open to all ideas and suggestions. Would like to get the setup ready to go before spring!! :usa: |
I am thinking your going to need 500rwhp to be mid 10s and 600 to 700 for 9s. I would look into TFS heads and bigger cam to get close to 500rwhp. Or do the 317s/Ms4 with nitrous would get it done. Could do L92s and matching cam with spray also. |
Found this article on the search and was thinking if he was getting these times with less gear and off the foot brake a set of ported 317's should flow close to stock L92 and have a little more compression. Going of the Trans Brake and Powerglide should give me a little better result. https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...am-10-80s.html |

theres cam only ls1 cars that have done high to low 10's with 400-440 to the wheels so thats definetly a false statement with a cam/ nitrous 6.0 in a 3000lb car you'll easily be into the 9's |
i agree, a car could make tons of power but if its not setup to run its going no where, i have seen lots of guys cam and spray there way to 10s |
FWIW I weigh in @ a staggering 170lbs. So raceweight will more than likely be under 3200lbs since im loosing the 406sbc w/ the Iron heads. |

I would suggest a aluminum short block for more weight savings. Your gonna need as much weight saving as possible to get close to that goal especially trying to do it n/a stock cube! Any idea of what the 406 is making for power? |

Yea that weigh in at less then 3000lbs by a long shot! His car weighs 3012 without a driver! Lets see your time slips for doing it then since its so easy!! :gtfo: |
I just figured if RobZ could do 9.98ET in a 3100lb c5Z06 5.7L with some Trickflows and Cam I might be able to take a 6.0L that weighs close to the same with a 2 step and TransBrake on a stalled Auto to around 10.5 on stock castings with a good cam. Looks like my main problem is PTV clearance. |

his car also went 9.98. Id be happy with 10.50's!! Id give the 60' to the regal before the Z06 as well |
Figured I would update the parts list with the currents parts I have gotten for this project. First off reweighed the car with 6 gals of fuel, full race weight on the 406ci Iron Headed SBC it weighed in at 2980lbs with NO Driver. (I'm about 170lbs) UPDATED: -02-27-12 Anyways the parts list: 04 CTSV oil pan Stock Bottom End LQ9 (364ci) Trickflow "AS CAST" 220 cc heads 64cc Chambers, Ferrea 2.04/1.575 valves "LS1 setup" .660 TEA Valve Springs Comp Trunion Upgraded Stock Rockers Trickflow 7.500 Pushrods TEA spec'd cam 240/244 .613 .596 109LSA 107ICL Edelbrock 1.75-1.875" Stepped LT's with 3.5" Collectors Ceramic Coated MSD 6010 24x Control Box SLP Heavy Duty Oil pump (Blue Sping for now) ASP 25% Underdrive Pulley EWP ARP Rod Bolts ARP PRE 04 Block Head Bolts GM .051 MLS Headgaskets 850 CFM Holley 4150 Carb Powerglide w/ 1.76 First Gear and Turbo350 Main shaft and Trans-Brake Coan Stall set to flash between 4K-5K depending on Gear, Weight, and Engine 33spline Full spool 9inch 4.56's Vic Jr. intake Trans Dapt 4595 mounts JW Performance 93019LSD Flexplate Still needing Alternator bracket, Starter Bolts, GM Flexplate Bolts Any suggestions or comments??? My car makes 405rwhp through an unlocked 5000+stall, TH400, spooled 12 bolt, 4.11's, 28" tire with 20pounds of air. Not a dyno queen set-up by any means. The cluelessness of some of the people on this site blow my mind sometimes. |
