Default Kooks 2" or 1 7/8" x 2" Stepped Headers

Maryland Speed has some great prices on their headers this week.
Lowest I've ever seen. Black Friday Sale.
I need some opinions on which to get. 2" or 1 7/8" x 2" stepped headers.
Mods are in my sig.
Thanks

Steering shaft?
I thought Kooks was one of the best header out there.
What's the new best header now.

I've got a set of 2" Kooks on my car and it clears everything fine. I do have an MWC k-member though. Only complaint I have about them is that the drivers side hangs pretty low. I've thought about trying a set from ARH to see if their ground clearance is better.

I would go with the straight 2", Im guessing those heads have a pretty big exhaust port. Over 400 cubes and a 5k+ stall you wont gain anything anywhere with the stepped header. Im using 2" on my setup as well was recommended it by a nuber of people over the stepped

Stepped will always make power over a straight header.

I have Edelbrock 1 3/4" x 1 7/8" on there now, left over from my old 382.
But, I don't think there big enought for the 418. I always heard that the stepped header was better for torque more than hp. So I'm thinking the 2" would be better for more hp on a all out race car. This motor will be seeing 7000 rpm's all the time.

Curious on how you came to this conclusion?

Improved scavenging and velocity with virtually no loss of flow. As the exhaust goes down the tube it expands. Ever take a look at a serious series racing header (that allows stepped headers)? Some F1 cars have 4 or 5 steps on them. The actual head exhaust port is slightly smaller then 1 5/8"

Here's a good article on it, explaining it more technically.

Nice article. It said that on a bolt on car you would see some gains.
But on a highly modified car maybe not so. You would need some custom headers built for your modifcations.
So that was the reason I was asking. I think I'm going with the 2" headers.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Calvin Elston.

Don't play around. Big tubes make good peak numbers but are not the fastest down the track.

I have straight 1 7/8 Kooks. The only "fitment" issue I have is with #1 and #3 spark plug wire boots lay on the primaries... just barely, but enough to warrant a heat sleeve.
