Results from the HOT ROD Pump Gas Drags!
Here are the results as noted by one of my friends.
" This was a very good event!
Besides the fact that the weather was absolutely perfect and the race went off without a hitch, there were no whiners!
All the competitors were friendly and relaxed. The atmosphere was more like a Power Tour than a race. That's a nice change of pace.
It was also nice to see a decent variety of cars. No Buicks, Pontiacs (not counting the 4th-gen. 'Birds), or Oldsmobiles this year though. Photos to follow.
Here's the results from my hastily written notes. Apologies to anyone's names I screw up. For those unfamiliar with the format, these were street legal (licensed, registered, insured & inspected where applicable) vehicles running on 15 gallons of provided 93 octane fuel.
In all, 50 cars were selected to participate. They had to survive a 30 mile drive from the Comp Cams facility to the Memphis Motorsports Park without dropping behind the escort vehicle. This drive wound up being right at rush hour. Ouch!
Two cars fell by the wayside on the drive. A local 1969 Yenko Camaro began to run too hot and an early C3 Corvette had his ignition box overheat. They were permitted exhibition passes at the track but were out of contention.
After a 1/2 hour cool down, they began running. They were to make three passes each and they would be judged on their average time over those three runs. Without further ado, here's how it played out. They wound up picking the top ten, and the overall winner. (Kinda like the top 11.)
10. 10.00 Brian Clarke driving a blue Nova
9. 9.99 Tom Hunsucker in a black Hemi 'Cuda
8. 9.95 Chris Johnson in a 1969 Camaro
7. 9.85 Mel Graham in a 1969 Camaro
6. 9.83 Jim Pravis in a black 1968 Hemi Charger
5. 9.76 Kevin Zasky in a black 1969 twin-turbo Hemi Charger
4. 9.70 Mike Thompson in a red S10 pickup with a 357 SBC
3. 9.58 Ray Doti in a red turbo Nova
2. 9.47 John Cunningham in a white Nova with a N/A BBC
1. 9.45 Ken Close in a 1934 Ford coupe with a BBC
The top dog was Robert Schmidt in a beautiful white '66/'67 BBC stick-shift Chevelle that averaged 9.40.
I'll post some of the photos I took at the track later. I've been up for 21 hours at this point so it's time for some . Meanwhile, check out some nice pics of the pre-race preparations at Comp Cams: http://www.compcams.com/Community/Ev...sChallenge.asp

Greg did a good job as a field reporter! We had a great time watching these true street cars. As a side note, the little white Chevy II that graced the cover of the new Hot Rod magazine had a 10.04 average. He lifted early on the first pass, then ran a couple of 9.8s.

Cool! Thanks for the update. Was hoping to see one of our LS1'ers in there, but guess not. Was also hoping to see our local guy in the top 10 as well, but he's not there either. I bet the remaining racers were probably pretty closely clustered after 10.00!

Thanks for the post regarding the results. My son Bryan in his 2000SS was one of the 50 invited for the show but the night prior to our leaving we broke the car trying to get in his NHRA license certifications passes for cars in the 8.50-9.99 time range. Congrats to all the participants. We will be taking BRYAN's car to some of the other events coming up. I am a liitle dissapointed an FBODY didn't make the top ten tho. But look for some low nines and maybe high eights in VERY near future

Well, I just got home. 2, 12 hour days of driving in 3 days. Then the day i between of teching, cruising and racing til midnight. Then a cruise back to the hotel (in my car) with the t-tops off and drink until 3:30 am last night. Yee haw.
I ended up with a 11.03 @ 124.xx But I was happy to be there enjoying myself.
Taner ran a 10.5x@???
The machines were incredible.
The guy that won, Rob in the white Chevelle I think was also the most impressive car there. It was a beautiful white with a blue vinyl top. It had steel bumpers, stock bucket seats a small tach on the steering column, all steel body. Simply beautiful.
The track was awesome, awesome machines and a great time with group that went down.
Thanks guys for all of help getting my car ready.

actually Phillip bridges ran 10.53 all 3 runs, MAtt had some issues with his new combo. i blazed my tires all 3 passes, oh well. the air was ****! traction was pretty good just not for me, lol!!!! i had 1.57, 1.70 and 1.59 60' times. main tire criteria was d.o.t. i went 10.53, 10.63, 10.50 all about 133-134 mph. the DA had to be ****, it rained earlier in the day, and then fortunately cleared up to race as it rained today in Memphis
no 4th gens in the top ten...oh well! i was not going to risk thousands of dollars invested on pump gas! no ******' way!!! i will hose it hard when the time comes
i threw a hundred shot at it and went to have fun! i think it is safe to say i accomplished that unfortunately it ran 3 tenths slower and 3 mph slower than last week c'est la vie. it was hard to maintain a good amount of bottle pressure.
i still have to solve my alt belt issues with the madman-alt relocate bracket, i have destroyed about 7 belts to this point, now i have the time to re-design it and make it work. at $18 per belt it is getting expensive. i have already gusseted the bracket and cleaned up a couple of other things, now i need to make a bracket to pick up off the rear of the alternator to brace it at a 3rd point to solidify the setup, the entire braket flexes when rthe motor is revved up, doh! i have plent yof time before n vs s to correct that issue.

The was a 66 Chevelle from Calgary that was sporting a 632 c.i. BB and lots of juice. He had the highest mph by about 5mph above everyone else. I think it was 156. He had lots of traction problems and ended up hurting the motor on his second run.
There was a red Nova running a small block with a T88 he was running 9.0x's and then his fuel pump went south on his 3rd run.
There was 68 vette with a ??? big block. He ran consistent 9.1x's but he did not make the cruise. His MSD took a crap and he was dq'd but they still let him race for fun.
Lots and lots more.
