Advice to get in the High 9's

I just finished doing heads, cam, and bolt-ons to my 2000 Z28 and I figure it will run ok with the junk I had laying around but I'm gonna start planning a new motor since this one has 260K miles on it and probably isn't what it once was. I want it to run high 9's on about 250 shot of nitrous and continue to be my daily driver and be full weight. The things I don't want to change are:
3:70 gears
Overdrive trans
Ported 243's
LS6 intake
11:1 compression

I drive the car a lot and don't want to make it where I can't take it on trips if I want to. If anybody has a Recipe that fits my requirements, please share. It getting tough in my town lately!

If you're not set in stone on nitrous going turbo is always an option...

I have seen plenty of JY 5.3/Turbo setups in the high 9's.

its not that hard... didn't run my buddies car all the way thru the 1/4 mile but it went 6.21s @ lena lifting the throttle to get it off the bumper.

JWStevens Apr 24, 2014 09:31 AM

Yeah, I 1/8 mile race most of the time. My main concern is that the car stays very streetable. I've looked and thought about a turbo so many times I can't count but I've decided its just too much crap in these cars. My cam is already 236@.050 so that seems pretty streetable, I just don't really want to get crazy with the duration. Ill probably buy a 4" stroke kit and a LS2 block.

what converter do you have?

What weight removal do you have?

my buddies car weighed in at 3380 with him in the car(he is 300lbs). That was with a TR trak cam(231/234), ported heads, SS4000converter, 12 bolt and 4.10s. on a 175ish hit.

JWStevens Apr 24, 2014 01:45 PM

I just did all of this at one time and haven't been to the track yet. I basically just used junk that I had laying around the shop.
Ported 799's
LS6 intake
LT's and dumped true duals
Cam 232/236 542/545 112
Cheap ass 4000 converter
New 4l60
3.70 gear

I'm not really expecting much from this set up because the motor is tired and its just kind of thrown together. I'm trying to look down the road.

JWStevens Apr 24, 2014 01:47 PM

Oh and I'm not gonna take weight out of it.

The Guy in MY 99TA Apr 24, 2014 02:13 PM

you should be able to do that with the right weight and a 200 shot. 250 shouldn't be needed. K-member, a-arms, spindles, chunk the a/c and brakes make a pretty big difference. His car dropped .4 in the 1/4 with only those mods.

JWStevens Apr 24, 2014 02:28 PM

Nah.... I can't lose the A/C and I don't want to take anything off of it. This is a daily.

Hard to answer the question without a budget.

JWStevens Apr 25, 2014 10:57 PM

Well, I'm not changing the things I've already said I wanted to keep, so the amount of nitrous, short block and cam combo is really all that's left up in the air.

TTur1996 May 1, 2014 02:31 PM

I haven't seen anything about what you did to the bottom end. You hit that thing with 250 on a stock bottom and well, lets just say, good luck. Crank might be fine but the rods and pistons are another story.

I've got a friend who has successfully ran 350hp jets on a SBE for a few passes. But it was a 25K mile motor. Its still running today. The car keeps 250 jets in it at all times. Went 5.9s SBE cam only. He is making some changes and hoping to go a lot faster still SBE.

Really hard to believe.

the stock bottom end will live a long time on 225hp shot. i know this first hand. i have had 300 on it as well. only reason pulled them out was no traction. 91 fuel, cold air intake, two steps colder on plug, homemade methanol injection.

speedtigger May 3, 2014 03:47 PM

I think you can do it. Simply because of what mine will run. Yours is lighter and more aerodynamic.

My engine is not much. Junkyark LQ9, PRC Stage 1 Ported LS6 heads, 226/234 cam, Circle D 4c (3800) converter, 390 gears and a 81n jet tune (about 200HP). So, yeah. I think you can do it no problem.

JWStevens May 31, 2014 02:48 PM

I made this post screwed up. I planned on building another motor after this one died and I made that list with the things I didn't want to change but as far as the things not on my "keep" list, they are the items in question. Ill probably just build a 400+ inch shortblock and order a custom cam and put 250 on it. I was just wondering if anybody had something similar to what I wanted.
