Anyone with M6 and 3.73's?

Well, the 4.10's had to come out because they were making all kinds of racket and had a horrible wear pattern. At the time the only alternative was to put 3.73's in so that is what happened. Felt like I lost a buttload on the bottom end going from 4.10's, but I was never able to race at Temple with the 4.10's. Anyway, just wanted to see what you all think of my times I ran last night.

I went down to a decent track (Temple-Academy) and ran. The weather was not very good, just my luck after driving 6 hours! With the data from a local airport, I calculated DA to be about 2200 ft. although I am not exactly sure about elevation at Temple-Academy (still better than Lubbock) It was humid as hell, had dew forming on the roof my car while we where there and the temp was around 65F.

So with the mods listed below in my sig (also had cut-out) and running on these greasy Kumho Ecsta Supras, how do my times compare? Thanks

Looks like you did great with those 60ft times.. Get those down and you will be in the 12's for sure...

108 is a good mph especially for your 60' times. A strong car. You have a 12 sec. car if you cut the 60' times down to 2.0 or better.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if anyone had much experience with the 3.73's behind an M6 or not. They seem to give me slightly better times than with the 3.42's. First gear is definately better. Overall, I don't feel much difference though. I was going to use my brother's Nittos at the track, but he left his locker socket for the lugs at home in the driveway. So hopefully I will get to run it with some drags soon. Gonna have to break down and buy some of my own.

What was wrong with the 4.10's? You just got a bad set or what?

Re: Anyone with M6 and 3.73's?

Well, we got what were supposed to be a set of Motive 4.10's. They came in a white box, unlike previous Motives I had seen, so we were kind of hesitant in the first place. Anyway, from day one they made racket, not bad at first but slowly beginning to sound like nine kinds of hell. So the tech who put them in was gonna check and see if he could adjust backlash to quiet them down but when he got in there he said the wear pattern was all jacked up. So yes, we are assuming the gears were bad. It has a GM dealer set of 3.73's in it now, because that is what they had in stock <img src="images/icons/frown.gif" border="0"> Oh well, they are much quieter and I guess maybe a little stronger. Still would like to go back to 4.10's someday. Car was awesome with those gears.

4.10s in a stock 10 bolt is asking for problems but if they had a bad wear patter that could also mean a bad install. my .02

You mean the car was bought new with 3.73's? It should've had 3.42's in an M6 when it was stock. I'm kind of curious to see how big the difference is between 3.73's and 3.42's. You should shoot out of the hole better (if you get traction). I've never been in a car with 4.10's so I'm not sure what it's like, but I can imagine that 3.73's are quite a bit different. I would think that what you lose in bottom end from the 3.73's you should make up in the top end when compared to 4.10's. Wouldn't you agree? Take it to the strip, that's the only real way to tell what the car will do.

I have actually already taken it to the drag strip, that is what the original post was about.

What I meant by what they had in stock was what the dealer had in stock at the time. They didn't have any 4.10's and I needed to get my car back asap so I had to go with the 3.73's instead of waiting for them to order the 4.10's. Yes, it had 3.42's stock as do all M6's. Odd as it may sound, I can't feel a big difference between the 3.42's and 3.73's. First gear seems a bit better, but overall it feels about the same. Granted, I did go from having 4.10's to 3.73's so that might make the comparison a little cloudy for me. The 4.10's make a HUGE difference, they were awesome.

Ok, I went back and read through it. You took it to the strip with the 3.73's and never got a chance to run with the 4.10's right? If that's the case, that sucks, I'm curious to see what kind of a difference it would have made in your e.t. and mph. Do your 3.73's feel better than the 4.10's on top end? Is it a noticeable difference at all? I'm curious because next year I'm going to go with one or the other.

Re: Anyone with M6 and 3.73's?

Well, as far as top end goes, the 3.73's do perform better than the 4.10's. But the fun factor with 4.10's is awesome. It is, as someone already said, kind of risky to put 4.10's in a stock 7.5 inch rearend. It is pretty much impossible to keep them quiet and they have a tendancy to break easier because of added stress on a smaller gear. But, taking all of that into account, I would still rather have the 4.10's. First gear is a little pointless without some good stick, although still a blast, but second gear is amazing throw-you-back-in-the-seat acceleration that gets your blood pumpin pretty good.
