Default Pepper tries out RCR.

Hey y’all.

I made the trek last night to RCR. (River City Raceway).
Since the last time at the track I had done a few things to the car that should have helped its ¼ mile performance. For example I had the PCM tuned by MTI on the dyno using their new LS1-Edit and car wise, I had finally removed the front bumper. Since the car was to be trailerd to the track and not driven I felt safer than in the past about removing the front bumper. I don’t know if RCR has a scale or not (I never saw it) so I don’t know what the car weighed, sorry.

Removing the front bumper was not hard at all. I called up a buddy at MTI and he gave the skinny on the high points. Sure enough 30 minutes later the Styrofoam bumper and supporting plate/bracket was on the ground. I still get the “heebbie jeebies” at the thought of driving around with out that bumper. That just can’t be safe. (Has anyone had an accident with it removed?)

I had purchased four 10,000 pound straps from Home Depot (Thanks Larry Cato!) Get this they were only 11 bucks or so apiece. (KILLER DEAL…I saw them for 33 bucks each, later in the day at another place)

Well I had the car, track prepped before leaving the house…I cannot tell you how much better that was than laying on my back and doing it at the track like normal. (Another big thumbs up for this whole “trailer thing”)

So me and the woman headed out to RCR around 3.00 pm and got there around 6.15 not too bad a trip and the Avalanche got 12 mpg towing a trailer at 75 mph. It’s not the 20 min trip to HRP but hey…. What to do when your favorite track is closed? ROAD TRIP!

RCR? Man it LOOKS nice. Lots of parking and easy tech. That is the last of the nice things I had to say about the track for the rest of the night.

Me and the woman drove over to tech and they waved me through pretty easy. We then went and got in line. What line? LOL there was one car in front of me. They wait until the car is about at the end of the track before they start letting you do your burnout. So we waited forever and then it was the peppers turn to try out the track. I had chosen the right lane because a fellow LS1tech-commer “Loco” had met up with us earlier and told us the left hand lane was not giving out 60’foots on the time slip. (That was the first bad mark for the track)

Ok so I pull up to the water box and there is like a damp spot… no water. Just a wet spot on the concrete was all. Sigh… oh well. So I get the tires …damp. And pull forward and do the burnout. I thought I did a pretty good one. I pulled forward to the line and stage.

Time slip:
r/t .5137
60’ 1.592
330’ 4.1556
1/8 7.0020
1000’ 9.1435
¼ 10.9630
mph 124.68 !!!!!!! whoo hoo! A New best for me.

Man that sucked, either my trusty E.T. Drags let me down or I spun because of the track. Since I have never spun on these tires I really didn’t suspect the tires.

One thing to note they carry their numbers out to the 4th decimal here at this track. (That’s a new one on me)

I came back around to the starting line area and parked the car. My wife was like WTF? I didn’t know what to say. I had spun and was kind of scratching my head in consternation. So I lowered the tire pressure to 15 on the rears from 16 and waited a few mins before getting in line.

I talked to a few other folks out there and they were ALL spinning at the line. Heck it seems my 1.50 60’ was about the best 60’ of anyone we talked to. Eh? “Were not in Kansas any more Toto”. They surely don’t prep the track like HRP.

Ok enough bitching.

I waited for a big tired/slicked car to get in front of me and pushed the car up to the water box area. Did my burn out and laid down some more numbers.

Time slip:

r/t .593
60’ 1.50
1/8 6.87
1/8 mph 98.72
e.t. 10.84
¼ mph 123.69

After the first debacle and fretting about that spinning and wheel hop breaking my stock rear end I had done a LONG burn out and wanted the tires to have all the chance to be hot and sticky. I had gotten behind a two big tired cars and still spun my *** off. I did improve my 60’ a little but not much. The tires hooked then broke loose then hooked then broke loose… man I just waiting for that rear end to shatter. I was developing a sincere hatred for this track's ….launch pad prep.

Ok, I have to mention the HUGE amounts of rice out there. How bad was it? I might be exaggerating… but if I am… it is not by much. I would say 8 out of every 10 cars was RICE! So even if they would have prepped the track it would have been torn up IMO by the plethora of RICE.

Lordy it was bad. I mean it was BAD. Rice, rice baby.

So after the last slip, sliding debacle (my last run)
I went hunting for someone to talk to about it. I found the owner of the track ….TODD was his name. Todd, after hearing from me and some other big tired cars assured us that he would prep the track and make it right. He whined he had already put down 35 gallons of VHT before the track opened up and it was the weathers fault. The weather was AWESOME. My lord it was fine. But no amount of praying was going to fix that slip-sliding launch pad.

Well with Todd’s assurance that the track would be fixed in 30 minutes me the woman went and got a snack and prepped the car. Well…an hour and a half later Todd still hadn’t done squat to the pathetic launch pad. Folks were wheel hopping, slipping, spinning, and every other euphemism you can think of for poor launch pad performance. It was getting bad when 17 sec civics were spinning. Whatever track prep they had done earlier... was long gone. The launch pad at that point was history

Poor Loco was all over the place. Loco, come to HRP, your quest for the 11’s will end right there. All you need is a ONE good 60’ and you will be there. Sorry, but I would be surprised if you EVER achieved that on a Wednesday night at RCR. Todd told me they prep the track ONCE when the track opens and that is it, on Wednesday nights.

Sucks. So after a big tired stang got behind a vette that had E.T. Streets I jumped in behind them. I was leery of the track but I had just driven 3 hours and I wanted something to show for it. Besides the good MPH I had gotten on that first pass. Man I watched those last two cars like a hawk. I lined up right in both of their rubber marks. I have to mention this was in the left lane and the other two runs were in the right lane. This is after a loooong burn out.

Time slip for the last run?

r/t .610
60’ 1.603
1/8 7.07
mph 97.69
¼ 11.07
mph 123.01

Man the car was all over the place. I barely just kept it in my lane. Word of the day? SPIN. My impressions of that track on a Wednesday are not good. To put it bluntly …IT SUCKED. From the lying owner to the sorry ***, non existent track prep. OK.
As I was coming back from the end of the track my wife was motioning me to the trailer with a flashlight, she was PISSED OFF. She had had it with the track. It was now at a dangerous point. Folks were spinning on EVERY LAUNCH. And her husbands last pass looked more like a slalom run than a ¼ mile blast. She had had enough. I was already heading for the trailer anyways (I had enough also). It was a wash. Time to go home before either somebody got hurt or I destroyed this rear end 300 miles from home on a sorry *** launch pad. (Or at least poorly maintained) Track prep once a night? *sigh*

Enough complaining.

The good news? I did get a new MPH best. The car did feel good..real good when it wasn’t slipping around like a newbie ice skater.
The shifts were all crisp and clean. The car didn’t bauble at all besides the starting line escapades.

Jody and I had a wonderful night/day on the road and I got to see how the other half lives and the tracks they have to race on. Folks in that category? You have my condolences.

That was my night… not as stellar as the weather would have promised. But it WAS fun and it WAS a learning experience.

Later amigos.

Cool report, good to see you blasting 10.8's on a different track. Nice mph too!

Yeah I had talked to one of the guys from Nickens crew & he told me they rented the track for a day. Made 5 runs and put it on the trailer. Its not the prep. The track does not hook.

On a side note he also said HRP can be rented for $975.00 a day + $60.00 per hour for ambulance service with a 3 hour minimum. We can run from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and they will prep the track all we want. So 6 or 8 people get together and the cost is minimal and you run as much as you want. It don't get no better than that. Any takers?

Yea me. If we can get enough folks. Sounds like fun. That is if they will really prep the track "all we want".
But if just big tired cars were with us.... we shouldnt need TOO much prep.

Man I went down to 13 psi last night to get it to hook. RCR just is not a "hooking' track IMO.

It was a fun trip regardless of RCR. I had fun and got to meet some REAL cool folks. (The new 124.69 mph best is not TOO disapointing either!)
Man the air ws good last night... to bad it got wasted.

Well count your blessing Texans, I guaruntee that RCR it still a better prepped track than Carlsbad. You're on a dirt road most of the time and there are weeds going out of the asphault, it's literally impossible to cut sub 2.0 60' on drag radials here much less street tires. I know RCR sucks compared to HRP, but remember you're mother saying there are starving people in China. Well there are pissed off people in Cali!

I know what you mean, we took the tires to 8 at Ennis on Saturday and could only manage a 10.48 no 60' at all.

Hey guys, bring your LS1s up here to Northeast Ohio(Thompson Raceway). Your 10-11sec cars will quickly be deminished to high 11s or maybe 12s. We get better traction on the road leaving the track, then on the strip!

If they wouldn't bitch about my rollbar (lack of side bar), I'd be in too (renting HRP). Bet you'd get 10-15 people.

It can't be that cheap. Usually renting a track costs 5000-6000$/day.

Its not renting it out for an event. It is also only Monday thru Thursday. Of course Cody could be full of **** I will find out for sure tommorow. There may be a limit on the number of cars, I don't know. I know we were invited so at least three can go.

I'm gonna try out RCR on a Saturday and hope for a better prepped track. If not, I will definitely hit up HRP real soon. Do they have Test and Tune on weekends (Sat/Sun)?

Those must be the prices in the high rent neighborhoods in CA. Not near that expensive around here, at least for anytime we've tried to do it.

I'd be in for renting HRP as well if they won't boot me for running a high 11 without a cage.

Ok straight from HRP, 1 car $750.00 plus ambulance at $60.00 with a three hour min. 10 cars $300.00 each + 1/10 the cost of the ambulance. We can run from 9-5. They will prep the track whenever we need/want it done. Sounds like a deal to me as we can't figure out a damn thing only getting 2-3 runs a night on a crappy track prep with the added bounus of cars breaking, oiling the lanes and the huge crowds. They need a couple of days notice as well. We are game, can we get 10 people interested?
