I guarantee you can and have one made to your combo, it will result in a lot more satisfaction than just ordering some part number, chances of something like that working are slim, and even if it works... you're leaving something on the table.

There arent "infinite" numbers of internal combos. We know there are basic but sufficient case sizes for our common applications, usually 9.5, 10.25 and an 11 incher. You have a pump, stator, and a turbine. Three variables internally. These guys know what combos do what in common applications. As long as you talk to them beforehand it shouldnt be labeled as a "shelf" converter even though it probably is bc they've done the exact same combo 100 times before, know what to spec, and have a few sitting waiting because they are so common.

To me that's custom. Picked components for your application. I have had experience with 2 9.5" converters being completely different and act completely different. So if Chris at circle d does him a converter or says 1 he has on a shelf is what he needs then its custom as far as i am concerned

Yes, just calling a company (ATI/PTC/ETC,ETC) and buying a 3000, or whatever stall = a shelf unit. Having one spec'd by a converter BUILDER for your combo and built for YOUR combo will give better results every damn time (may need a re-stall to make perfect since there are variables.)

A "5000" stall may or may not stall at 5000. Car weight, motor TQ, trans gearing, rear gear, tire size....all play a part.

Yes, some "BIG" suppliers may have stuff ready to go and it works well...or good enough.

I will also agree.... if you have "similar" combos, one "shelf" unit may work well and should be fine.

sorry to thread hijack but this is really similar to what I'm gonna be running. I have 5500 8 inch, glide, 4.86 gear, 28" tire.

Curious about the rest of your combo and results.

I not finished yet so I don't know the exact numbers it'll run until I get out with it. 416c.i. LS3 on e85, 13.3:1 SCR, Cam Motion LLSR, AFR 260 heads, Holley hi ram 105mm, going to start with a set of REM polished 4.30's , I think 9.50's 140 ish is very possible for this car, a little less than 3100 with driver, this is a track only car.

That's likely going to want a 5200-5400 rpm 8 inch converter, depending where it makes peak tq. If I had to throw a dart and start somewhere... that's where I would start.

I had a 13.5 to 1 402 with the cathedral 240 ET head, healthy Hyd. roller in it, with a stock gearset Th400 and 4.10 at 3600 it went 10.50 like clockwork... at 3100 I'm sure it would have been knocking on the 9 second zone. This combo was restricted as well with the fast 90/90 I had on it as well, we could see it on the dyno hit a wall at 6500 and just not make any more power but carry it flat to 7200... if I had put a single plane intake on it like the CID one that's out it likely would have made another 30 hp, and would have peaked much higher..... I had a9 inch 5200 behind this as it was going to see spray.... with an na I would have put an 8 inch in it, probably picked up a couple tenths just from that.... fwiw.
